My great-grandfather, John J. Corcoran, was born in Ferbane, Co, Offaly in 1885. I'm not sure when he moved to New York City, where my grandmother Mariah Corcoran was born, and consequently, my father, John White.
John Corcoran's father, John J. Corcoran, ran a pub called Corcoran's in Ferbane, and a drapery store. I am interested in any Corcoran's still residing there that may be from this line, and also would like to know who my great-great-great grandfather was married to when he fathered his children. We have no record of that woman anywhere in our family history.
Thank you for any help.

Hi Joanna,
rootsireland.ie has a baptism record of John Corcoran father John - 1887 in Offaly.
I searched years 1885 + - 2 and this is the only one that came up. However, I checked the parish by trial and error and it was Rahan RC not Ferbane.
1887 would be feasible as baptisms were sometimes done a year or two after birth. there were also transcription inaccuracies.
If you google Irish phone book and select eircom you can search Residential for Corcoran Ferbane, Offaly & there are 6 listed with one in Rahan.

Col,
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm sorry to ask more questions, but was his mother's maiden name on the certificate? Can I request a copy of that certificate? Should i now go to the Rahan parish page and ask questions on that page? I will go the phone book route also. I hope that brings me luck.
Thank you again, Joanna

Hi Joanna,
I can't guarantee that his mother's maiden name willbe on the certificate but they ususally are.
You need to purchase the certificate yourself on the rootsireland.ie site.
Yes give the Rahan page a shot.
Good luck

Hope you dont mind me butting in - I am from Rahan.
There are lots (and I mean) lots of Corcorans living in Rahan. Corcorans also had a shop and post office in Rahan (now closed). If I knew which family of Corcorans it might be I could put you in touch with some of them.

Geraldine,
Thank you for butting in. I appreciate it. I am going to give you as much info as I have on the Corcorans I am looking for. As I stated before, John J. Corcoran owned a pub called Corcorans and a drapery store. According to my great Aunt, our Corcoran's ran that pub until the 1960s. She said they are mentioned in a book about Ferbane.
What I also know is that my great-great Grandfather John J. Corcoran was married to Catherine Allen Corcoran, maiden name Fitzgerald who was originally from Castledaly in West Meath, and who died in 1957 in Ferbane. They had 5 children - Bernard who died in Ferbane on January 3, 1930. Twins Denis and William, my great grandfather John, and two other girls, Maria Kathleen and Nancy.
My great grandfather John J. came over to New York and married Lucy Carter on April 16, 1911. I have requested a copy of their marriage certificate from NYC; should receive that in 4 weeks.
I hope this helps narrow things down for you. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Thank you again, Joanna

My father was Denis Corcoran. His mother was Katie Allen Corcoran from West Meath. His 6 siblings were The same as the ones you mentioned. But, his father was Bernard. Google the 1911 census for Ferbane to see an actual copy of the actual form completed. For more info email me at MKS351@SBCGLOBAL.NET Hope to hear from you.

Peter and Bridgit Corcoran had a shop in Ferbane in 1900 - a grocery shop. Peter was 62 and his wife was 33.
In 1911 Bernard and Katie Corcoran have a grocery and bar in Ferbane. Katie is from Westmeath.
They have 4 children - John Francis age 3. William and Denis 1 year and Maria age 2 months.
If you look up the eircomphonebook.ie and put in Corcoran and Ferbane there are 7 Corcoran families still in Ferbane.
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner about this but hope you are making some progress

Hello,
I emailed you at that address above about 4 times. I was re-visiting the site to look up the other side of my family and thought I'd check on this again. So, I'm trying to figure out exactly how we would be related. 3rd cousin once removed? I'm not very good at this. I did look up the census. Interesting that they had a servant. I imagine she came with Katherine to Ferbane when she married Bernard.
I hope this note finds you, and finds you well. Take care, Joanna

Hi,
I apologize you didn't receive a reply back in December of 2020. I'm hoping you are still on this site.
I am still very interested in learning about my Corcoran ancestors, yes. I changed email addresses a few years ago, so I stopped getting these emails. I promise I wasn't ignoring you. 😊
Hoping you see this and respond. Take care, Joanna (everyone calls me Joey btw)
