Good afternoon

I am visiting Ireland in September and hoping to establish where my great grandfather was born. He was born in 1839, his sister's name was Jane. They emigrated to South Africa in 1859. Possible relatives were Robert Renison of Lockeen and Robert Benjamin Renison who was born 8th May 1836 in Parsonstown. I have searched and asked for help from various quarters but so far there has been no positive result. There is a chance that he was from Shinrone (certainly any area near Birr, Roscrea or Loughkeen (Lockeen) would be a likely place).

Any help would be appreciated.

I searched the Griffiths Valuation head of household listings from the mid-19th century for all of Ireland and the only Renison records were three in Co. Antrim and Robert Renison in Lacka townland in Loughkeen civil parish in Co. Tipperary. I assume that is the Robert you mentioned in your note.

I searched Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for William around 1839. I assume your family was Church of Ireland. Roots has considerable records for the C of I churches in Co. Offaly including Birr, Tullamore, Shinrone etc. I also looked in North Tipperary and the only record I could find was an 1843 record in Birr RC church for a Bridget Renison with father William.

Can you clarify the religious denomination?

  • Dear Antoinette and Roger,

I posted another account in the ROSCREA parish section.  My great-great-great grandparents were Robert Renison (b. 1796 94 1798 and Jane Eddington (b. 1809 or 1811), and married 1828.  Their youngest child was my great-great grandfather, Robert J. Renison born in 1853, and he was the 12th child of Robert and Jane.  The only birth record I have found of all their 12 children is for Catherine, born in the year after their marriage in 1829 and baptised in SHINRONE.  I am guessing Catherine was the oldest born in 1829, and Robert the youngest born in 1853, when Jane was 42 years old.  Family accounts place the older children of Robert and Jane in South Africa, and one in Australia.  The younger two, Thomas and Robert (my ancestor) went ultimately to the United States.  They were Church of Ireland, which is Episcopalian in the United States.  Thomas became a lawyer, and Robert became a Canon in the Church in Los Angeles after doing missionary work in Canada beginning in 1880.

  • Good afternoon

Thank you for all the above information. The church would have been Church of Ireland I am almost 100% sure.

I have just returned from Ireland today after a visit undertaken to visit the areas where I believe my ancestor was born or lived. No new information was uncovered but to visit Birr, Roscrea and Loughkeen, etc. was truly something special.

I will use the information to try and delve further.

  • Hi Antoinette,

    Please email me: brent@entrylaw.com

I did a y-chromosome DNA test through FamilyTreeDNA, and found that I am in the H haplogroup associated with India, which is attributed to the Romany people of Europe.  William Renison was a weaver, and that is one of the common occupations of the Romany people.  I believe our family, the Renisons, were Romany (Gypsies) who either came to Ireland from Europe or from England / Scotland, sometime in the sixteenth or seventeenth century.  The y-DNA is passed down through the male chromosome without change over many hundreds of years so can be used to trace surnames through the centuries. I believe I am the only Renison so far tested.  I match the DNA signature associated with the Locke, Campbell, and Bailey families, which were Gypsy families from Europe.  This is an interesting breakthrough in our Renison family history.

  • Good evening Brent

This is very exciting news! There are many male Renisons in South Africa, all descended from William Robert and Benjamin Joseph although I don't have much contact with most of them. However, I do have contact with someone who is researching the Renisons and will pass this information on to him should there be any interest in anyone doing a test.

I have to say this information rings very true to me as my father had a dark complexion with black hair and it was always said he inherited his looks from his Irish ancestors! That said, he could also very easily have been Spanish, Egyptian, Israeli or Lebanese (or Indian for that matter!)

Please keep me posted of any further developments and thank you so much for posting this message.
