  • Hello Kerry

I was just browsing messages looking for GANNON and saw yours. Yes, I have a Bernard Gannon who married a Cecilia Gannon and had a son James in 35 and daughter Mary in 36. Not sure of the relation to me, but I have been told we are the "Aughrim" Gannon's so there may be a link. Wagga Wagga is also familar.

My great great grand parents were Francis and Mary (nee Gannon) Gannon (Aughrim, Elphin). Their son Patrick, my great gf immigrated to USA.

I've done extensive research, still much to do. So if you get this, would love to chat and compare.

    Best,

    Kate McMahon

  • Hello, I am in Australia and also looking for the Gannons of Elphin Roscommon. My grt grandfather was Michael Gannon born sometime between 1857 and 1860. His marriage registration here in Australia says his parents were Michael Gannon and Mary Grogan (that is how I read the scawly handwriting). This information on his parents has only been recently found. On his daughter's birth certificate he states he came from Elphin Roscommon. The only breakthrough I have ever had was through DNA matches to people whose trees lead me to a Thomas Gannon and Nora Callaghan. I match with decsendants of sons Patrick b.1849, Thomas b. 1851 and Francis b.1857. I found they also had a daughter Mary b 1837.

Also could someone explain to me is  Elphin a town or is it a larger area like a diocese that covers many townships as there seems to be both. So when he says he came from Elphin Roscommon what size town are we talkind about?

  • Hi Katie

Sorry I have only replied now .Had some trouble getting onto the site as it has been  along time  since my post .

Sounds like there may be a connection  in our family trees.I haven't done much research in the Gannons side of the family. I have has a couple of hits with DNA  with Dennis and Francis through Ancestry  also found Mary's birth  cert. on one of the sites . Unfortunately I dont know much about the Gannon side of the family ,only what I have found in  the local paper and online. My father  youngest grandchild was not told very much about   the Gannons (his mothers side )which is very disappointing and unfortunately everyone has died from that era.

Happy to share what I have

    regards

  • Hi Stoneleigh,

    Re Elphin

In 2012 I had the opportunity to go to Ireland  touring around. My sister and I went the Roscommon  and Elphin  both villages of the county of Rosommon. Very pretty places with very friendly people .While we were visiting the  Roscommon Castle ruins I met a man  who worked for the Gannons..They were race horse owners. I can't remenber the christian name I would need to look at my travel diary. I can tell you the horse racing  gene has been passed down.

Wagga Wagga  has several Gannon families. some still there.I have'nt found a connection to my family but may be there is.

I live in the Nth East Victoria Australia abt 1 1/2 from Wagga

    regards

    Kerry

  • Elphin is a small town in North Roscommon, about 14km from Carrick on Shannon and 18km from Boyle Co Roscommon

It is also a Prish, a Diocese and was a city at one time.
