Hello, I am trying to find information about my greatgrandmother Anna McCarthy. She was born in Ireland abt. 1881 and her mother's name was Mary E. McCarthy, aslo born in Ireland. I know that Anna's father was born in Ireland, but that is one of the Mysteries I don't know his name.
It looks like Mary E. McCarthy immigrated to the United States in 1892 and Anna Followed in 1893; which seems odd since Anna was only 12, but I assume she traveled with others (IDK). I know that Mary T. (Anna's mother) was a widow in 1910 and I can't find any other info about Anna's father or the family before 1910, except the immigration dates.
Mary E. McCarthy lived in Providence, Rhode Island in 1910 accroding to census records and she died in December 1917. Her daugther Anna married John J. Doyle and they lived in Providence and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Anna died in July 1921. They are buried in Saint Francis Cemetery located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Other names on the headstone (I assume relatives) are Mary T. McCarthy d. 1925, William J. McCarthy b. 1906 d. 1933, Justine J. McCarthy b. 1870 d. 1959. There is one more name Ellen T. Riley (I think the maiden name is McCarthy), not sure how she is related, but my aunt does remember an Autie Riley. Ellen Riley's Death would have come some time in the late 40's.
If anyone recognizes these people and can share any informnation, I would really appreciate it. Thank You

Hi Karlene
Do you know much about their emigration? Other than the dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Castle Garden, Ellis Island ), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. Shipping manifests can also be checked. These free sites offer searchable databases http://www.castlegarden.org/ and http://www.ellisisland.org/
You may be able to search the Civil registration records which are available from the General Register Office (GRO) for birth or marriage records for Mary E. or Anna. These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
The Church of Latter Day Saints also has a free searchable website which may contain helpful information. https://familysearch.org/
The name McCarthy is found throughout Ireland but the highest concentration of the name is found in County Cork. You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ . This may lead to some clues concerning the areas in which it may be favourable to search.
Once you have managed to pin down a county or parish of origin you could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applo… or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.
I wish you the best of luck with your search.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

I also am looking for a Mary McCarthy, not sure if related. She was born in 1892, to Patrick McCarthy and Mary Parker McCarthy. She came to the United as a young girl or woman, and married in 1917, she had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, and she died March of 1936 in Hartford Connecticut. that's basically all I have to go on other than she may have had a brother, Robert
