Hello I am tracing my fathers family his grandfather is Thomas Roddy born march  1879 address Lisphilip  Parish ballinameen,  Parents are james Roddy (a farmer/stonemason) born around 1842 in Scor beg I think and thomas's mother is bridgit/brigid Redican or Rattigan born around 1843.

In the Griffiths valuation there are 4 roddys listed in the Kilmacumsy area I think they might all be related. I believe my lot are listed on the griffiths valuation in lisphilip there are two people listed there Luke and Bryan Roddy possibly brothers. There is also an Owen Roddy in Gortnacloy and a James Roddy in Tartan.

I also think there is a Luke Roddy from this property involved back around 1820 or so maybe.

My Roddys  are also listed at the same property in 1901 and 1911 at house 2 lisphilip, Kilmacumsy

Thomas has other siblings

Bridget Roddy 1875 ?? unsure about this person

John Roddy 1875

Luke Roddy 1877

Thomas Roddy 1879

Catherine Roddy 1882

Michael Roddy 1885

Honor Roddy 1873 who went on to marry a Mathew Quinn  from Runnacocka their children are

Patrick Quinn 1895   james Quinn   1897 Mary Katherine Quinn   1899  John Quinn 1901

Bridgit teresa Quinn 1905  Mathew Quinn 1908.

Thomas Roddy 1879 moved to leigh in lancashire where he married and had a family. He also served in world war 1 and survived.

Any info on these familys would be appreciated as I am planning a trip in 2014 to Ireland

Thank you

I found the 1873 marriage index record for James Roddy and Bridget Rattican. ( You can ignore the other spouse names. They were for other marriages recorded on the same page). You can write to the GRO for a copy of the marriage record which will show the names of the fathers of the bride and grrom and where they were living when the marriage occurred. www.groireland.ie Fill out the GRO form and provide the year of marriage, registration district ( Boyle) and the volume and page number ( 4 and 81). Costs around 4 euros.

By the way, my grandmother was a Norah Roddy from Roscommon but she lived near the town of Ballaghaderreen.

  • Hi Pam, my ancestor Francis Conry and his wife Brigid (nee Dempsey) are listed in the tithe appointment books as neighbours of your ancestors. Their son named Luke was baptised in Elphin in 1811.

  • I am wondering if you have been successful in finding out more on the Roddy family.
Lisphilip, Scurbeg & Tartan are all villages on the same road, now called Tartan Road. appx 3miles from Ballinameen village.
I was born in Tartan & I am familiar with the area. If you had no success I can try and make enquiries on your behalf.
I know for certain that this family name is no longer based there.
Hope this is of some use to you.
    Una.

Una / Umallia, I am eager to learn more about this family.  I believe the James RODDY that married Bridget RATTICAN is my maternal great uncle.  This line happens to be my proverbial brick wall. James had a younger brother, Thaddeus T RODDY, which is my great grandfather.  We believe he may have been born about 1862.  Thaddeus emmigrated to Washington DC about 1880.  His grandchildren and great grandchildren still reside in the Washington DC area and have never known anything about him or his family.   We hired a professional genealogist and was able to locate two other brothers of James and Thaddeus:

John RODDY (1840-1915) and Martin RODDY (1856-????).  John and their father, Thomas RODDY (1815-????) were last known to live in Kiltybranks.  John's wife: Bridget McDONOGH (1842-????).  Thomas' wife: Mary CORRIGAN / CURRIGAN (1813-1868).

We have several family members with DNA testing online in hopes of finding cousins and learning more about their history.

Hi! James Roddy and Bridget Rattican/Redican are my ggg grandparents. They lived in Lisphilip, Kilmacumsy. If your great grandfather Thadeus Roddy was James's brother, then he was the son of Luke Roddy and Catherine Deane of Lisphilip.

There is further info about them here:

    https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Roddy-377

The siblings of James that I know of were Thomas (1840-?), Winifred (1849-1905), Bridget (1851-?) and John (1854-1917).

Hope to hear from you soon,

  • My name is Elizabeth Franzen. Thaddeus Timothy Roddy is my mother's grandfather. He lived in Washington, DC. Married Minnie Rowe and had 6 children. My mother, Helen Louise Simmons Bausch, was the daughter of their oldest daughter, Louise Roddy. Would love more info since Thaddeus actually raised my mother and she adored him.

  • Hi Pam,

My Grandfather Luke Roddy was born in Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon and married Bridget McLoughlin, her married name. They lived outside Elphin and had four children, Austin my Dad, Louis, Vincent and Bridie.
I have heard all of the above names at one time or another, my guess is they were Brothers.
