Hello,
My name is Brian McMurdo. I'm trying to track down information about my father's family, whose names were Banahan and Kilduff and who seem to have lived in the Kilteevan area of Roscommon at least in the late 1840's. My great grandmother Catherine (Katie) Banahan is listed as having been christened in Kilteevan, Roscommon in 1847, and her sister Margaret there in 1849. Their father's name was George Banahan, and their mother's name was Mary Kilduff.
The information I believe is from parish records but I'm not sure. The names are shown in their latin form:
Catharinam Banaham (sic)
Christened 21 December, 1846
Margaritam Banahan
Christened 30 April, 1849
Father Georgii Banahan
Mother Mariae Kilduff
Her mother was probably Margaret Mulvey and her father Patrick Kilduff. Margaret Mulvey on her headstone was desribed as from Athleague, Roscommon.
I'm curious to know if there are further records or information about these people, and where I might look?
Family tradition is that George Banahan was from a family of five or six boys, all of whom died young, and that Mary Banahan remarried to a Mike Mellynn, but this might have happened in the US.
I know nothing about George Banahan, nor Patrick Kilduff.
The Banahans /Mellynns immigrated to the US in the early to mid 1850's, and came west to California, settling the Gold Country of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They are buried in Sonora and Columbia, both old gold mining towns in Tuolumne County, California.
Any information, suggestions or guidance you could provide would be appreciated.
I enjoy your site. Thanks for any help.
Best wishes,
Brian McMurdo

Hello again!
I searched for a baptismal record for George Banahan with no success so likely his parish does not have records back to the time of his baptism. I searched on the Roscommon Tithe records from the 1820s and 1830. Most of the Banahans listed were in the Kilbride and Cloontuskert parish just north of Kilteevan and Athleague.

Records for the RC parishes in that area start later. Kilbride 1835 Clontuskert 1865.
Civil registration did not begin until 1864.
