Looking to see if there are any descendants of the Hussey Family who lived in Swinefield also known as Streamstown near Cloonfad. My Grandfather Peter Hussey was born there in 1883, his parents were Patrick Hussey and Bridget Cottle and siblings were Thomas Laurence Patrick John Margaret Bridget Catherine and Mary. From what I can make out Patrick my GGFather must have married into Streamstown as that is where the Cottles seemed to be from. Which means that he might have come from the townland of Castlequarter originally but I'm finding that hard to confirm. I would be very interested to know if anyone has taken a dna test in the area or knows of any surviving line of these Hussey's.
Thanks in advance
Peter Thomas Laurence Hussey
formally of Ballygar County Galway
now in Perth Western Australia

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!
We have several local volunteers who may be able to answer your question about possible families still in the area. I will copy your post to them and they should reply to you within the next 2 weeks.
If you have done a DNA test, you should also consider joining one of the family DNA test pages on Facebook or one of the County DNA pages.

Dear Peter
I believe that my paternal grandfather was Laurence/Lawrence Hussey of Swinefield Roscommon I think he is on the 1911 census at 3 years old. I never met him and am trying to figure out if I have the right person but going off what I know from limited family discussion and his wedding certificate I am sure that this is him. If so he may be descendant if this line
Thank you

Dear Peter,
I extracted the following information from the Cancelled Land Valuations Book for the Parish which are accessable in the Valuation Office, Irish Life Centre, Abbey St Dublin.
In 1856 Plot No 13 was split between John Guilfoyle and John Cottle. They were renting these plots from Francis Kelly their landlord. They each had a house on the land. which was 6 Acres 1 rood in size. They each paid one pound as rent for the house and five shillings for the land each year.
In the 2nd Valuation in 1867 Martin McDonnell had taken over as Landlord. Patrick Hussey had taken over from John Cottle in 1867 and John Conneely had taken over from John Guilfoyle in 1869. The holding size and rent remained the same.
In 1901 there was a change to the land holdings John Conneely was now holding 4 Acres 1 Rood 2 Perches while Patrick Hussey held 3 Acres 3 Roods and 5 Perches rather than 6 Acres 1 rood betweeen them. The rent remained the same.
In 1940 Patrick Hussey changed to Thomas Hussey
John Connolly changed to Mary 1927- Catherine 1930 then Ellen in 1933.
In 1942 the Hussey house was noted to be in ruins. There appeared to be a Swanick there in 1954. However Patrick Husseys name was down in 1955. In 1966 this changed to D.J. Mitchell Plot Number 13c
Ellen Connolly name changed to James Conneely in 1948. This House in ruins in in 1951 In 1966 Sonny Mitchell took over this holding also. Plot Number 13 ab
A local genealogy publication called The Cloonfad Magazine is published each December. The site is currently down for upgrading works. If you write to The Committee of the Cloonfad Magazine, C/o Cloonfad Post Office, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. and give them the above information they should be able to come back to you with an update on Sonny Mitchell.
Note Cloonfad Cemetery has a plot with a steel cross with the name Patrick Hussey.
I hope the above is of assistance to your research.
Martin.

Hi Martin
Thanks very much for your reply and for copies of documents. I had thought that Patrick Hussey who married Bridget Cottle (John's daughter) in 1862 must have taken over the rent of the lands in Swinefield (Streamstown) around that time and your documents confirm that. It also means that Patrick Hussey must have been from elsewhere in the parish, maybe Castlequarter it's hard to tell at this point.
With the land handed to Thomas Hussey in 1940 is it possible to find out what happened since then and if there are desendants of Thomas still living in the area?
The Laurence Hussey mentioned by Michelle in the previous post is most likely to be a brother of Thomas Hussey.
Michelle & Martin, if you have further information please email me at finance@streamstown.com.au
Once again thanks
Peter Thomas Laurence Hussey

Thank you this is very interesting. The Laurence/Lawrence hussey I am looking at had a mother Bridgette whose maiden name was Levy. He did have a brother Thomas and his father was a Patrick hussey. They were of swinefield number 15 I don’t know how to verify further as it appears there may be a couple of years discrepancy in his age from his wedding certificate. I may try the parish email for further assistance. I would like to verify the line if possible. Michelle

Hi,
I recall from some of my reserach of the Geraghty family from Kitullagh that we'd come across the name Hussey but from Clougher upper and/or lower.
May be worth checking Griffith Vaulation of tenements etc
Hope this helps.
