  • Joan:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The townland Emlagh Beg is in Oran civil parish on the west side of Roscommon near the Galway border. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland but could not locate the marriage record or any baptismal records for possible children. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Oran civil parish does show a Thomas Gilooly living in Emlagh Beg. Can you tell us more about your ancestors? How many children? Did they emigrate?

  • Hi Roger, thank you for your reply and welcome. The information I have is that Thomas and Julia had two sons Michael Joseph born Oran 1850. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 and subsequently married and died there. The other son I have is Bernard, born 1855 who married Ellen Hughes and they had several children in Ireland before emigrating to USA sometime between 1881 and 1885 where several more children were born. They both died in Norwood, Norfolk, Massachusetts in 1908 and 1916 respectively. Any further information you can find would be gratefully received. Thanks again. Joan

  • Hi Joan!

The RC parish records for Cloverhill parish start in the 1860s after Thomas and Bernard were born.

I did find the civil marriage record for Bernard and Ellen Hughes in 1876. The record shows the names of their fathers. See lastb record on this link

I also searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and they had four baptismal records for children of Bereard and Ellen as follows: Mary Anne 1877 Catherine 1878 Mary Anne 1880 John 1881   Looks like the first Mary Anne died young.
