He emigrated to England (Essex) 1812. Born 1793 Boyle, Roscommon. Married Anne French Kemp Dec. 1812. Died 1856. Occupation shepherd. Had 10 children. Am descended from one of them - John Egan. Mother perhaps Maria Loogh.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The baptismal records for Boyle parish go back to 1793 which is the earliest for any parish in Co. Roscommon. I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and they have a 1793 baptismal record for a Michael Egan with parents William Egan and Mary Loough which is your Maria Loogh. Here is the parish register so you can check out the record. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0548  No siblings that I could find on Roots Ireland

  • Went to the link but found it impossible to read.  I think he was baptized on May 7.   I have a clip from Irish Catholic Parishes and it says his father was Gulielmo Egan and mother Maria Loough. Witnesses were Fargallus McHugh and Brigida Brennan.  He seems to have had a brother Gulielmus Egan baptized Sept 5 1794..

There doesn't seem to be a record of his leaving Ireland in 1812 or a record of entering England.  He would have had to make his way across England to Essex where he settled in Little Yeldham.  The family became members of the Church of England and all his children were christened in Little Yeldham.

I wish I knew for sure if this is my Michael Egan and if there was a way to do more tracing.  My most secure record is that of his marriage in Little Yeldham to Ann French Kemp in Dec. 1812.  A further English census (1841) stated that he came from Ireland.  So, I did a little bit of back tracking.

I went back to Roots Ireland and just looked for a William Egan baptismal record and located the record in 1794 as you indicated. Mother's maiden name was Looby which the search process does not pick up when you enter Loough. I also found an Eleanor Egan record in 1804. See below.

  • I think we could be related further back. I am also stuck about the same time in Boyle. My ancestor, Patricius Egan, was baptized on 25 Mar 1793, in Boyle. He was the son of Joanni Egan and Brigida Brennan. I cannot go back any further. Perhaps your William and my Joanni were brothers.
