  • There's a possibility for the birth of your Michael which adds a few more details in the extracted civil births on FamilySearch, as follows :

    Name : Michael Hopkins
    Date of Birth : 20 Sep 1864
Place of Birth* : 0132, Ballaghaghderreen, Co. Mayo Note
Parents names : Edward Hopkins and Winny Corcoran

The *'place of birth' given on these extracted records is often the name of a sub-district rather than an exact location. A research cert (€4) from the GRO would likely give a more detail place of birth e.g. name of a town or townland, and also include father's occupation. The number in the start of the 'Place of Birth' is the register page reference and may be used to connect to the correct BMD Index record needed to order a cert.

Next step after the birth cert would probably be a search for Edward and Winifred's marriage, in Church records if they were Catholic, and maybe a check for baptism for Michael.. he may have been baptised in the same church his parents married in so could provide a place to start a search back.. .

I didn't spot any likely siblings for Michael in the extracted records.

  • not sure now if that's actually the correct birth to be an ancestor of yours, as there's also a death in the same area in 1866 of a Michael Hopkin's that seems to match that 1864 birth.

  • hi

    thank you so much

you have found the right family

i can not find a marriage for edward hopkins

but i found one for winny corcoran in cashel in 1864

but it did not give her spouses name

in 1871 edward and winny were living in england

without michael so the michael you found seems to be the correct one

any idea how i could trace edwards birth parents ?

    thanks again

  • You would need to know where your Edward was born, i.e. which town or parish, so you could search for a possible baptism, but I would always work one step at a time and start with the marriage first. Bear in mind that not all parishes have records back to the 1830s.

Do you have a birth cert or baptism record for Michael ?

If either include a more details location, e.g. a townland name, or the name of the church or parish it could help your search...

What towns or counties do Winnie and Edward give as their places of birth on the English census returns you've found them on ?

p.s. Dont quite get what you mean about that marriage ... did you get a cert to see what the couples names were ?

  • That 1864 marriage in Cashel district shows up on the civil BMD index and also extracted civil records on FamilySearch, and unfortunately is not correct for your Winnie as it's between a Winefred/Winnie Corcoran and a Patrick Henesy

see : here (Patrick) and here (Winnie/'Wineford') for the matching index records, and here for the partial extract.
