My great-grandparents Thomas (b. 1846) and Mary Fahey (b.1856) were living at the top of Henry Street in Roscommon in 1901 (census data) with their children William (b. 1885), John (b.1887), Thomas (b.1890, my grandfather), and Harriet (b. 1892). My grandfather Thomas married Bridget Murray (from Stonepark) and they lived in Ballybohan where I was raised in an idyllic childhood. My great aunt Harriet married a man called Salmon (?). I was taken away from Ireland when young but returned many times to visit my grandmother Bridget (b. 1900, d. 1995). I know of one relative I have still there: Rose Eady of Stonepark, but I'd like to know of and correspond with others who are descended from my great-grandparents. I was born in 1944 and came to America in 1968. I'm now retired and live in Copperhill, Tennessee.

  • Hi John,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. I'm from Roscommon town as it so happens! I've just written a few letters to people who might know your family connections. As soon as I hear back from them, I will let you know.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sinead,

Thank you for your reply. Though I've been gone for a long time I just
need to close my eyes to remember my childhood years in Roscommon town
and I guess my heart never left. It may help you to know that my
grandmother, Bridget Fahey, had a house on the ballybohan/ballybride
road out of town and she was well known to many people in Roscommon,
living as she did to the age of 95 (RIP 1995). She was the Godmother
of Terry Leyden, former member of Parliament for Roscommon, (who knows
of me from my many visits to spend time with my grandmother). I do not
know if she is still alive but Rose Eady in Stonepark is of my
grandmother's family and I have heard she has histories of that side.
All of my grandmother's generation and many of the next were  raised
on the Eady farm and I remember being told by my grandfather Fahey of
the years of An Gorta Mor and my grandmother's heritage from her
grandparents. If possible I would also like to know how Rose Eady is
doing. I was able to send her a CD of my grandmother and my
great-uncle Frank Eady some years ago but have not had contact since.
If you can arrange for me to get back in touch with her it would make
me happy to be able to do so.

    Regards,

    John Fahey
