My grandmother, Bridget Gilrain, was said lo have lived in the Townland of Cloonarkin in County Roscommon during the last half of the1800's. Where was (is) Cloonarkin and in what present-day Townland?

  • Robert,

If you go to a free website called askaboutireland there is a search function there on a bar called name book search.

This allows you to put in just a few letters of a place name and it throws up all the possibilities there are around the country.

I tried this with cloonarkin.  I put in cloona  and didn't give a county .  The nearest I have found is cloonark in Co. Mayo.

Try also the irishfamilyhistoryfoundation to track down any gilrains.  It's an unusual name so you might get a clkuster of them in one county.

    Kind regards,

  • There were Kilrane's or Kilraine's in Cloonarkin near Cloonfad,  also known as Cloonerkaun in Kiltullagh Parish.

  • Thank you for the information about Cloonarkin. It should help considerably in my further rearch.

I have come to realize that alternate spelling for names and places in Ireland does present interesting challenges. My grandmother, Bridget Gilrain, used that name here in the USA and her brother used Kilraine.

Could this be it? It seems to be on the road south-east of Cloonfad village off the main road on the way to Galway with the spelling 'Cloonerkaun'
