I plan to visit Ireland in 1 month. My ancestor lived in Tawnymucklagh and Sroove in Sligo and immigrated to North America between 1842-1846. Am I in the right group? I plan to spend about 3 days in the area and I would love some ideas on people and places. The surnames are McDermott, McDermottroe, Costello, Plunkett. I have a bunch of other names from DNA testing that I know came from this area, but we haven't figured out how we are related, but the geography is the same (this area) and the DNA shows surnames of Kelly, Ford, McHugh, Quinn, Fitzpatrick, Devlin, Boyle, Brannon, Donahoe, McDonnell, Knott, Grady, Burns (Beirne, Berne) Collins, Burke,
My daughter is studying in Limerick so I will also be visiting her.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The actual civil parish for Tawnymucklagh and Sroove is Kilcolman but there is no need to repost since all messages end up on the main message board. The RC church is Castlemore and Kilcolman but better known as Ballaghaderreen. Tawnymucklagh is about 4-5 miles northeast of the town of Ballaghaderreen. There is a Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen called the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nathys. This is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Achonry which is mainly in Sligo and Mayo. The only parish in Roscommon is Ballaghaderreen although at one time Ballaghaderreen was considered part of Mayo. Unfortunately, baptismal records for the parish start in 1851 with some gaps. Marriages start in 1830 with gaps. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0119
Don't know where you are staying but Ballaghaderreen is about 15 miles or so from the Knock shrine so I would plan on going to Knock. I would also visit the library in Ballaghaderreen. the librarians are Deirdre Creighton and Eithne McDermott. The library is located in the Square in Ballaghaderreen but is not open every day so check for hours. Durkin's also in the Square is a good place to eat in the town but there are other nice pubs.
A number of the names you mention are local to the area. My McDonnell family came from Carracastle village about five miles west from Ballaghaderreen. I also have had my DNA tested with Ancestry and Family Tree DNA.
Let me know what questions you have.

Thank you so much Roger!! I just sent an email to Deidre and Eithne asking their hours and verifying the phone number I found! I did a 2 sentence introduction of my ancestry from the area! I will definitely visit Durkin's for lunch if not other meals as well !! If you have tested at AncestryDNA and FTDNA, maybe you have had your raw data loaded onto Gedmatch (free, run by genetic genealogists, to allow genealogists from multiple DNA testing companies to compare at one site.) I have several kits from my American Irish cousins on gedmatch, their kit numbers are M182656, M261933, M820262, M821867 and M846956. All of these kits have a link to the Sroove and/or Tawnymucklagh McDermotts. I plan to bring a couple of DNA kits if there is someone who really thinks they are related to my McDermotts and willing to test!
I need to find a couple of nights lodging, if you have recommendations! You are welcome to email me directly at gilmoreduhaime@msn.com
MANY THANKS

I am on Gedmatch F299474. I just did a comparison with M182656 and we do not match.
Durkins has accommodations but it is an old facility. We stayed there and also at the Percy French Hotel in Strokestown which is more modern. I think Strokestown is 15-20 miles away.
