Hi Janis,

I am a new member so i hope i have completed everything correctly. My name is Paul Gilmore and i have a link back to William Duke Gilmore and Elizabeth Meredith in Sligo. I have William and Meredith being born in approx 1810. I am from the New Zealand tree and know very little about the Gilmores in County Sligo, Ireland but i do have quite a comprehensive tree.

I have not been to Ireland, but have done what I can online with the tithe applotments, etc. Our Thomas Gilmor/Gilmore/Gillmore and Mary/Maria Read/Reed immigrated with their first six children from County Sligo to settle in Canada about 1840. They lived in Ontario until their deaths in 1887 (Thomas) and 1885 (Mary), both in Oxford County, Ontario. I know the names of 7 of their 10 children: James (1829), George W. (1837), Maria (1839), Thomas (1842), Jane Ann (1844), Charles Wallace (1846), and Joseph (1848). Three more children were born between James and George W. (deposition of a family member in a military pension file), but they remain unidentified and may have died early. Maria was the last to be born in Ireland and Thomas was born in Canada.

They were protestants, worshiping in Anglican churches when available, and in Methodist churches at other times.

We are hoping to do some research in Ireland later this year, if we can.

I moved here from New Zealand in 1990

From memory - it has been quite a while since i have even looked at my family tree so i am going from my memory. There were four Gilmores that emigrated to Australia; one family stayed in Australia, one moved to New Zealand and two moved to the USA. I would imagine that there must be a link to your tree but it is possibly connected to William Duke Gilmore born around 1810. I am not familiar with tithe applotments so any information would be welcome. The Gilmores owned some land but paid rent to Jemmet Duke.

I have not been on this site for some time, and am restarting my research into my mother's Co Sligo family, Kilmore/Gilmore and Scanlon.

I have also "moved" over here as my research is indicating that my Kilmores/Gilmores came from either Ardminnan in Kilshalvey-Kilturra-Cloonoghil combined RC Parish... or from the Cashel South, Achonry vicinity. Well, at least that's where I gotten to so far!

I am curious about the Gilmores in your family who emigrated to the US. The link to my original post is above in my reply to Janis. I have located what seems the best bet for their ship's manifest/immigration information. If correct, they arrived NY City 03 Mar 1851 via Liverpool as Thomas & Mary Scanlon (nee Kilmore/Gilmore) and an infant child, and possibly other family members as well.

I have very scant information on them in Ireland, but know that they settled in Erie County, New York.

I am coming to this conversation late but I have always been a little slow on the uptake. My g-g-grandfather was William Gilmore. His claimed birthplace was Ballysadare, County Sligo. His birth year is a little sketchier and I have tried to do the math from US census records. It was from 1808-1810 and most likely 1809. There is a record of a William Gilmore arriving on the ship Bowditch in 1830 and the age on the passenger list matches. There is no record on entry into the port of New York by port officials on that date or any close date. The Bowditch allusion would also be a possibility since he started showing up in Chicago records soon afterward. My great-grandmother was Susan Gilmore, born in Chicago in 1850 and she had older siblings all born in Chicago, Illinois.  William's wife was Margaret Sadler who was also born in Ireland. I am guessing they were married in the US and have no traces of information on Margaret Sadler and her birth except that it was likely to have been in 1815 according to the US, Illinois, and Chicago records. So, it is likely that my forebear, William Gilmore, was of the Sligo Gilmores but I have no other information on his forebears. His story was that he left Ireland because he was of the Protestant faith and felt that the Catholic populace was not accepting. Daughter Susan was a very enthusiastic Methodist in Chicago as were her immediate children.
