I am looking for my Maloney - possible Mullaney - family from Ballymote, County Sligo. My GGFather was William Maloney - son of Edward & Margaret Maloney. I think he was born in, or around, Ballymote circa 1820. He had a brother, Edward (b.1811) and possible two others - Patrick & Thomas.

The family were Church of Ireland and moved to Manchester UK in the 1830s - probably for work. They turn up in the Census of England in the 1840s where they were working, in Manchester, as weavers.

Any information gratefully received - many thanks!

  • Michael:

Ballymote is in Emlaghfad civil parish and the Church of Ireland records for that parish do not start until 1831 based on a reference book I have.

I also checked the Tithe listings for Emlaghfad parish from 1833 and there were no Mahoney/Mahony or Mullaney/Mullany records in the parish.

  • Thanks Roger - very kind of you to do a look up for me. Presuming the Mahoney/Mahony was a typo (my family are Maloney). Is there a place I could get the Church records, in Ballymote, from? Could I write to the Church direct?

    Many thanks, Michael Gorman

  • Michael:

    You are correct--a typoe.

It appears that the C of I church in Ballymote is closed. Here is a link which shows the remaining churches in Sligo. I would contact the Cathedral in Sligo town to see where records are maintained.
