My Great-Great Grandfather, Alexander Garrett, was born about 1785 in Ballymote, County of Sligo, Ireland. He was the fourth son of Reverend William Garrett, rector of the parish in Ballymote. I believe William may have had another son, Reverend John Garrett, who followed in his father's foot steps. That is all I know. I would appreciate any help in learning more. Thank you. Ted

  • Hi Ted,

There's a Rev. George GARRETT listed in in Killoran civil parish in the Griffith's Valuation. Maybe another son of William & Bridget.

  • Thank you McCoy and Laura for the information. I find gathering information going back approximately 250 years is like trying to put together a huge jig-saw puzzle with a whole lot of missing pieces. Every glue is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ted

  • Hi:

I just happened to find this site as I was researching Garretts in Galway/Sligo. My gt gt grandfather James Garrett was born in 1781 in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. He emigrate to PEI Canada in 1812. I did a DNA test with MyHeritage a few years ago and about 3 weeks ago got a match with a woman whose ancestor was Margaret Garrett, born around 1770 in Ballinasloe. We are estimated by the program to be 5.1 generations to a common ancestor. This was an exciting find for me as I have been searching for my ancestors in that area for a long time.

Margaret Garrett was the daughter of a George Garrett and his wife, Margaret Sutton. George was a member of a family that had extensive connections to the Church of Ireland. Close relatives of George Garrett were Rev. John Garrett, Rev, William Garrett who were vicars in Sligo and elsewhere.

I would love to correspond with anyone who has any knowledge of or connections to this family.

  • Hi Ted:

I am sure that we are working on the same family. My research has led me to the Garretts who were clergy in Sligo. According to what I am reading your Alexander Garrett is from that family. I would love to see what we can find if we can share information on this family. In fact, as I was researching what I think is my line, I did run across Charles Alexander Garrett who became Bishop of Dallas. Wondering where you live -- I am in PEI Canada. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi Marjorie. I just found this site and saw your posts of over 2 years ago. Sorry I wasn't aware of this sooner.  I also would enjoy corresponding with you. I am related to Alexander Garrett, the Bishop of Dallas, who at one time prior, was a missionary to Victoria, BC. His brother, Rev George W. Garrett, is my great grandfather, immigrated to the US (NYC) in the late 1800's. My brother, William (Bill) is on this site also and has lots of information on the Garrett family. I can be reached at jimbomaine@gmail.com. I live in Maine, USA. Best regards and hope to hear from you.  James (Jim) Garrett
