I am searching for descendants of the Sweeney family from Corhawnagh in Ballysadare Sligo. My great great grandfather Bernard Sweeney was born there in 1806. He was a clothier. He joined the 50 th West Kent Queen's Own  regiment in 1826 and came to Australia. He was sent to van diemans land ( Tasmania) where he stayed. He married Mary Mahoney, a widow  ( nee savage) (from Belfast) in 1836. Mary had two children James Patrick and Mary by then. With Bernard she had John ( my great grandfather)in about 1838 and Catherine and James, twins in 1842. A daughter Elizabeth  born in 1840 died in 1841. He left the army and ran a hotel in Launceston called the Star Inn. Bernard died in 1849 in Launceston where he been posted. Elizabeth is buried with him. Mary later married John Joseph Moore. She is buried in a paupers grave outside Hobart.  Any information about the Sweeney or Savage  families greatly appreciated as I will be visiting Ireland next year. Tania Sweeney

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I have had no luck in the search for a baptism for Bernard. The only one I can locate in the county is in 1801 in the parish of Ahamlish. Records for Ballysadare parish do not begin until  1842 so there will be no parish records available for anyone baptised or married in the parish before that time.

I couldn't locate any Sweeney in the Griffith's Valuation for Ballysadare. A list of Sweeney names for the period in the county is available here.

A John and James Sweeney are mentioned in the 1825 Tithe, but again, I cannot be sure they are your family.

Sorry I cannot be of more help at this point, let me know how your trip to Ireland goes and hope you enjoy yourself!

    Best wishes

  • Dear clare I think the John and James are related to my family as Bernard Sweeneys two sons were James and John and there are few Sweeneys in that part of Sligo. I need to see how I can follow up Tania
