I have been working to find my McGrath ancestors' parish in Ireland, and I recently came across an interesting lead from a Boston Pilot Missing Friends advertisement. I believe the linked record relates to my Thomas McGrath:

I am curious whether anyone might have information regarding McGraths in Gorteen. I looked at the Griffith's Valuation, and found a few McGrath families around the area, but none specifically in Gorteen at the time. Also, it looks like the census records will not be helpful for Sligo in this time period, so I am wondering how else I might try and find my Gorteen McGraths.
Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located an 1854 marriage record on Roots Ireland for a Thomas McGrath to a Margaret Cox in the Kilfree and Killaraght RC parish.. I'm wondering if this is your Thomas.
The 1858 Griffiths for Kilfree civil parish does not show a McGrath but there is a John Cox in Cloontycarn townland possibly the father of Margaret. The Griffiths for the bordering parish of Killaraght civil parish shows seven McGrath records. Five of the seven were in Derrinoghran townland. Good possibility that Thomas came from this townland.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?
Let me know if you have questions.
