Is this still an active parish and/or where might records have been transferred for birth and death on Coney Island between 1800-1900?

Thank You for your reply,

  • Coney Island is not a parish. It?s a townland. Be aware that it has an alternative name of Inishmulclohy, so you might see that in official records too.

You don?t say what denomination your family were but I?ll assume RC. Coney Island is in the civil parish of Killaspugbrone, and the RC parish of Sligo St John?s. Their earliest records start in 1831. You can see where copies are kept on this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/

The RC church generally doesn?t keep burial records so you may not find any death records till the start of civil registration in 1864. Deaths (and births and marriages) on Coney from 1864 onwards would be indexed under Sligo (town) in the Irish civil indexes on Familysearch.

  • Hi Ahoghill, Thank you for your most prompt reply!. Yes, my message was vague without details and I was hoping for a response from someone. You came through for me.

Yes, the Harans on Coney Island were RC. I found my great great grandfather in the GV in 1824 listed under Garvey Island. I had never found that island name before. His name was Michael Haran. I also found my great grandfather Hugh Haran in the 1848-1864 GV.

My grandfather James William Haran was born between 1857-1863, so before civil registration. He immigrated to the Unites States circa 1882-1884. I have been searching for a church record of his birth to substantiate my Irish heritage. Both he and my grandmother were 100% Irish.

I received another message this morning indicating St.John's is the parish to check and I will do so when I finish this message.

Thank you so much for your information!!
