I am trying to find possible relatives in Ireland with whom I can connect on my upcoming visit. My great-great grandparents, Thomas Connolly and Mary Gallagher, left Ireland and arrived in the United States in 1850. They setled in Essex County, NJ, living in Newark, Belleville, Orange, and Franklin. They operated the "Shamrock Hotel" in Orange. He, and several of his sons, were butchers, and had been butchers in Ireland. One son, Patrick, became a priest in NJ and rose to the rank of monsignor. A close relative, Martin J. Connolly, also a butcher, came to the United States around 1870, settled first in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, and then in Bergen County, NJ. Family tradition says they came from Tobercurry, but I have not been able to confirm this.

  • I have some Connolly (Connelly?) in my lineage. Mary Connolly lived in Rathlee, Co. Sligo (Easky Parish) with her father Patrick and mother Catherine (Tuffy) prior to marrying James Feeney from Owenbeg. She had at least two brothers John and Michael. Michael Connolly was the school teacher there in Owenbeg and lived with the Feeney's. Mary's son Patrick Feeney moved to the states, settling in Holboken near Newark.

If you find any connections please let me know!

  • My grandfather was Andrew James Connolly, Sr who lived in Belleville, NJ.  His great grandparents were Thomas Connolly and Mary Gallagher.  I wonder what relatives I have in Ireland, and if the famous Sligo Thomas Connolly bar is part of the family.  My name is Kevin Connolly.
