My great great grandmother Mary Jones (nee Laughlin) arrived in Geelong Australia on the Eliza Caroline in 31st March 1851. She is listed as one of a group of Irish Orphans from Co Sligo and is aged 16 years. She married Ambrose Jones in Geelong in 1852 and they had 12 living children, so there are now many Aussie Irish that can trace their lineage back to Mary. When she died on 4th May 1910 her daughter Bridget filled in the death certificate. Mary's maiden name is given as O'Laughlen (The Orphan list however gives her maiden name as Laughlin) and her father as Michael O'Laughlen and mother as Mary Royan (which might be a phenetic spelling for Ryan?) No one in the family has been able to trace Mary's roots in Co Sligo. My wife Anne and I are now retired and are planning to visit Co Sligo in mid June this year and would like to see if we can get some assistance in finding Mary's Co Sligo past.

Mary would have been born around 1831 and she was a Roman Catholic, father's occupation is listed as farmer and that is all the family knows about her in Australia. If there are any suggestions of how we might proceed in our search they would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read my request for information

Kind Regards   Peter Jones
