Verbal family history details that James Havey and Bridget Arkinson were married in 1833, had a son John in 1834 and sailed from Sligo arriving in Canada July 1835. Also 3 younger brothers of James travelled with the couple and child. However the younger brothers (names unknown) got separated from the family in Montreal Quebec. After an exhaustive search James, Bridget and John journeyed ahead to Arnprior, Ontario. The brothers were not heard from again. Names of parents or any other siblings of James or Bridget are also unknown.

In  2004 I paid a visit to the genealogy department at the National Library in Dublin. I was told surname was Atkinson not Arkinson. While the name Havey and variants appear all over Ireland, only one choice came up for both surnames, namely the neighbouring parishes of Easkey and Skreen. The Catholic church in Easkey was built in 1834 but did not start record keeping for several years. The original Easkey cemetery was in shambles. I found some Heaveys in the newer Easkey cemetery just on outskirts of town. However I can establish no clear relationship line to these folks.

Also I have records of an Anne Havey who sailed from Sligo in 1843, arriving in Quebec City, Canada where she married Peter Finnerty, County Kerry, also a new immigrant. In 1851 Canadian census they are living in Arnprior, Ontario quite close to James and Bridget Havey. In the marriage record, Anne's parents are listed as John Havey and Mary Magee from County Sligo.  However I cannot establish if Anne Havey is related to James Havey. Anne Havey and Peter Finnerty lived the remainder of their lives in Arnprior.  If Anne is a sister, then I would have the names of James' parents! Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Technically, Easkey and Skreen do not border with two parishes (Kilmacshalgan and Templeboy) between them.

I did searched on Roots Ireland for the marriage record plus baptismal records for John and Anne Havey and got no record. Likely church records for the Haveys and Atkinsons are not available.

I did find two Havey records in the 1833 Tithe listings in Skreen. There are also many Atkinsons records in the Tithes for Easkey.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing.

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks for attempting to look records up. I'm not surprised you found nothing given the time period. I have ha no luck either.  I have found the land records as well in both Easkey & Skreen for Haveys and Atkinsons, but given I don't have the names of siblings or parents it's difficult to advance.  I should have indicated that Easkey & Skreen were close not neighboring as you have explained.   Bridget Ormsby Atkinson......I know Ormsby were land owners in this area but not sure why Bridget had Ormsby as a middle name.

I have had DNA testing done with Ancestry Canada 1 1/2 years ago. In addition to Ancestry site, I have posted my test results in in Family Tree DNA as well as  Gedmatch. So far no hits yet. This is my paternal side of the family. My father and his eight siblings are all deceased as well as my paternal granparents. Unfortunately my siblings have no interest in DNA testing at this time. I do have three relatives, all children of my paternal first cousins who have had DNA tested....so maybe .......

Thanks for your prompt reply and assistance. I haven't pursued research in Ireland as I don't have much to go on.

Like you, my wife and I have tested with Ancestry and Family Tree and our data is on Gedmatch. We have made some good connections and broken down a few walls. Just have patience, you will get a break.
