I am trying to trace where my ancestors the Boyde family originated from. My grandfather William Boyde was born in Ballincollig Cork with his three brothers, Robert, John and Randel. Their father John Boyde was born in Skreen, Sligo in 1855 . He moved to Ballincollig and died in 1942. His father was Robert who I assume was born in Sligo. Irish records are hard to find and I am stuck. The family were Catholic. Can anyone help?

Paula,
This looks to be John Boyde and family in 1911:

John married Hannah Kelly in Cork in 1902.
He was a police constable at the date of his marriage, so there may be some RIC service records to find. RIC policy was that you couldn’t serve in the county where you or your wife had connections, so that’s likely why he left Sligo. After his marriage he would have been due for another move. He may have chosen to resign and stay in Cork.
Randle isn’t a very common name so I suspect this farmer and his sister are connected to the family. Siblings to John senior perhaps?

Griffiths Valuation for Carrowdurneen, parish of Skreen, in 1857 lists several Boyd farms including a Robert Boyd on plot 1 (15 acres). That townland might be where your family originate.

Note that though Hannah & the children were RC, John Boyde was Church of Ireland. Matters if you are looking for his baptism in Sligo or for family graves there. Sadly Skreen Church of Ireland’s early records were lost in the 1922 fire, and they have no baptisms earlier than 1877 now.

Several Boyd farms, including one owned by Robert Boyd on plot 1 (15 acres) are included in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation for Carrowdurneen, parish of Skreen. It's possible that your ancestors hail from that township.
