I am searching for any connections to:

Richard Coughlan b. abt 1854-56 (died NZ 1894 aged 38)

Martin Coughlan b. abt 1855 (died NZ 1887 aged 32)

Both emigrated to New Zealand in 1877-79

Their parents were Martin Coughlan and Cathrine Hough who were married at Cloneska 15 Feb 1838

Other children of Martin & Cathrine (aka Kitty) included:

John Coughlan baptised Lisduff 9 Dec 1832

Patrick Coughlan baptised Lisduff 7 Aug 1841

Maria Coughlan baptised Borrisokane 20 Oct 1844

Some or all of the above may have emigrated to America.

  • Hi Kerry,

Just a quick update in relation to your query on Coughlan / Hough connections. We have located a record in the 1901 Censu for Catherine Coughlan aged 26 & Margaret Coughlan aged 18, in the townland of Lisheeen, Aglisgcloghane.  Catherine is listed as being a Publican & Margaret as a Shop Assistant.  We are currently researching to see if these girls had any connection to Richard / Martin Coughlan.

There is currently no Coughlan family living in the immediate area & there is no record of any Coughlan family in the 1911 Census.  This leads us to believe that they moved from the area in the early 1900's.  There is however a Coughlan Family living in the neighbouring  parish of Lorrha. We will check the local graveyard & church records as well as make enquiries with locally & will update you as sonn as we have found any further information.

    Regards

    Marguerite

  • Hi Kerry,

Apologies for delay in getting back to you. We are awaiting a time & date to meet with parish priest to go through records, we hope this will be before xmas & as soon as we have any further info we will be in contact. We are led to believe that one of the girls, Catherine or Margaret, mentioned in our earlier reply, married a school teacher, by the name of Quinlan or Cunningham & we are also trying to follow through on this information.  We will be in contact in the near future.

    Regards

    Marguerite
