when I was in Ireland recently, I contacted the Tipperary Heritage Research Centre about my great grandfather, Martin Ryan born 1836, and his family. His parents were Michael Ryan and Honora Ryan who were apparently first cousins. A cousin who visited Tipp many years ago had also found this, My question is they found families in both Pallas and Carhue, with a repeat of names. I know that if a child died, a subsequent child was often given the same name. Can anyone help with which one may be correct? I'm thinking Pallas because that is where Martin is listed, not in Carhue.

I agree with Pallas, I appreciate your encouragement and warm welcome. Without a doubt, I'll look into what the Pallas has to offer.

Can someone assist me in determining which one is accurate - the practice of naming a child after a deceased one was common in the past?

(1) Daniel Ryan (abt. 1800-1855), my 2X great grandfather, lived in the townland of Sergeant's Lot (14 kilometres southeast of Pallas) but there were ties to Pallas as well through his wife (Mary Lahey abt. 1806-1889). Unfortunately, I do not have any information about Daniel's parents or siblings. However, I do have a small DNA match with a descendant of a Jeremiah Ryan who may also have lived in Sergeant's Lot.
Have you taken a DNA test? I have 4 kits on GEDmatch as well as Ancestry, My Heritage, and Family Tree DNA.
Daniel immigrated with his family to Loughborough Township, Frontenac County, Canada West about 1850.
(2) I noted that you have a James Quinlan as a sponsor for your Edmond Ryan, baptized 18/11/1841. Family lore has it that there were Quinton (or more likely Quinlan?) cousins who also immigrated to Canada West. An interesting coincidence?
