I am searching the names of the siblings and parents of my GG GF John Lynch.  My GG GF was born about 1824 and died in Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada on March 1, 1896.  I have evidence of him in Canada on the 1851 Canada Census. He married Mary Farrell from Edgewortstown, County Longford.  I have circumstantial evidence that he may have had brothers James and Michael and a sister Bridget.  I have circumstantial evidence that his parents may be Jacobi Lynch (abt. 1805 - abt. 1858) and Maria Nugent (1806 - 1906).  Any assistance you could give me would be sincerely appreciated.

  • Hi Frank . . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . and Tipperary County . .

Lets see if we can be of some help . . . in your search . . .

    ________________________________________

    I began my search . . . ( using Roots paid)     given birth date 1805 +/- 5 yrs. . . . area S.Tipp . . BALLYNEALE . . near                 Carrick on Suir . . .2 Lynche's came up . . .

The other 2 looks quite promising  (see below ) . . . and MAP

    Jacob  1805 Carrick on Suir  . .  possible Father to  JOHN Lynch . . . Number 6 below  . . .

    _____________________________________________________________________

    The R.C.Parish Records for Ballyneale . . . https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1095 . . . as you will see . . only begin Baptism records in 1839 . .

    I am presuming . . . prior to 1839 . . . they were registered in Carrick on Suir  . .

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1101 . . . trying to trace thru. those registers . . is needle in haystack stuff . . .

    also . . I'm guessing . . maybe . . .that there wasn't a R.C. Chapel in Ballyneale before 1839 . .  .

    _________________________________________________________________________

    So . . again . . . the question . . . were they married in Ireland . . or Canada . . . ???

When I search for the Marriage in ALL Ireland . . date approx 1823 . . . Nothing

    _______________________________________________________________

    IF ..that is YOUR John Lynch . . . b.1809 . . . then his approx. date of Marriage . . . would be 1840 +/- 10 yrs.

    So . . first off . . I reduced my search to two Counties . . . Tipperary and Longford . . . NOTHING . . .

then I searched ALL Ireland . . . and the following lead showed up . . . (see below) .

    It's a long way from Carrick on Suir to Croom.Co.Limerick . . esp. in those times . . however . . not impossible . . .

then there is the difference in the Brides Christian name  . . . . .

    _____________________________________________________________

I'm presuming you have checked CANADA for a registration of a Marriage ???

    _______________________________________________________________________________

Here's a thing . . . there is also an Edwardstown.  in Co.Limerick   (see MAP below) . . . could it be possible that someone jumped to the conclusion

that there was only one Edwardstown . . . and that it had to be Longford   ??

Against the Croom marriage  . . is the fact . . . that FARRELL is a predominatly LONGFORD surname .

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0164

    50 Mary Farrell . . . turned up . . . in that time zone . . . and as most of them were registered in Longford Town . . . so . . it proved again .. needle in a haystack . . .

    _____________________________________________________________________________________.

    Again I searched LIMERICK County . . . for a Baptism of Mary Farrell . . .same years . . . NO joy . .

    _________________________________________________________________________________

    JAMES Lynch . . . 1824 . . . Tipperary Co. +/- 5yrs.

    MICHAEL Lynch . . 1824 . . .Tipperary Co.  "

    BRIDGET . . .1824   ...Tipp ...

NOTHING for the above names . . .

    _________________________________________________

    So Frank . . . I have run out of ideas for further searching . . .

    I hope you get something out of the above   ; ; ;

Best of Luck with your continued search . . .

    Cheers . . . Eamonn.

  • Hi Eamonn.  I can not tell you how thrilled I was when your email came.  Thank you so much.  It is sort of odd that I can tell you how many bushels of wheat, oats and barley my GG GF gathered each census year but I can not tell you who his siblings and parents are.  Eamonn, I am going to ask you not to give up on me - not just yet.  John Lynch existed.  Indeed my mother was raised by her three great aunts who were three of John Lynch's  daughters. I have pictures of my GG GF as far back as a young man as well as many of the Irish clergy that were part of his life.

In my late mother's notes she writes that John Lynch had brothers Michael and James and a sister Bridget

From Ancestry I am hypothesizing that Michael was born October 11, 1837 and Bridget December 20, 1841.  I have a photograph of my GG GF and his brother Jim when they were young men.

From Ancestry I am hypothesing that my GG GF is Jacobi Lynch born about 1805.  He owned land in Tullohea, Garrangibbon.  His wife was Maria Nugent born about 1806 in Kylanoreaseashy, Kilcash.

Finally, my GG GF was born in 1824 give or take one year.  My GG GM was born in 1833 give or take one year.  She is definetely from Edgewortstown, County Longford.  I do not believe this couple married in Ireland.  Indeed I have a John Lynch and Mary Farrell on board a ship that docked in New York on March 7, 1849.  The next I pick up their trail is in Canada in 1851.  They have a 1 year old son named John.

Could you please Eamonn give this one more "kick at the can".  In the mean while I will start searching the Carrick on Suir records.

    Cordially,

    Frank Bradley

  • Hi again Frank . . .

    They say two heads are better than one . . . H'm'm'm . . I wonder in this case .. . lets see . . .

    I looked at your ref. to 1851 Canada Census. . . (below) . . . and . . my first impression is . . . John is a single 28 y.o. . .in  Wellington Co. Ontario . .

which begs the question . . is he just there for work ?? . . away from his family ?? or maybe he is not YET married ?? what trade is he working at . . .

    ____________________________________________________________

     (1) .Question Frank . . . where are you in the World . . . are you U.S.   or Canada . . . are we talking about your Mothers ..Aunties  . . . Names ???

    were they Canadian born . . . U.S. born  . . . ??  I am aware of the proximity of Buffalo N.Y. . . as a possible crossing from Upper N.Y.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________

    (2)  Why would you be so sure . . . re.Census 1851 . . .that John Lynch . . is YOUR John . . . ??

    (3) Presume Census of 1861 . . . is your John again . . . now showing    " Married " . . . BUT . . way out in Victoria B.C.

         again this begs the question . . . where is his Wife . . . ???

    Could this be her . . . 1851 Census . . Quebec . . age 22,  (below )

    Could this be John 's ..Brother .. Michael . . . in Quebec City . . . (below)

    BRIDGET . . in 1851 Census . . Quebec City . .  .

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

    MARRIAGE . . . Canada . . . to Mary Farrell  (see below )  . . . maybe between 1851 - 1861 . . . (below)

    ___________________________________________________________________________

    Frank . . . my head is spinning with Lynch's . . . .

See how you are getting on with thw above  . . . .  it looks promising . . . .

    I decline to go further . . . as I may be on a complete false hunt . . .

    Cheers again . . . Eamonn.

  • Hi Frank . . .

    I paid another visit to South Tipperary . . . with add.info. re.   Townsland of LandHolding . . . http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Which brought me to a TAX roll . . known as  "Tithes Applotment " . . . .1823 - 1837 . . . ( tax men were good at recording - always )

    ( see below ) . . . here we show JAMES and David      http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=Lynch&firstname=&county=Tipperary&townland=&parish=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=20

So this is confirmation of their land holding . . .

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587444/004587444_00167.pdf

    ________________________________________________________________________

    Fast forward then to another TAX roll . . . called " Griffiths Valuations "  1847 - 1864 . . .

and again we find (below) . .JAMES and Patrick . . .

    ___________________________________________________________________-

So next . . . I had a look at our National Census of 1901 . . and sure enough the Lynch's . are still farming the same land . . (below)

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1901&surname=Lynch&exact=&firstname=&county19011911=Tipperary&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&townland=&ded=&age=&sex=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=&birthplace=&language=&deafdumb=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=100&houseNumber=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumberDiv=&protNumber=&parish=&barony=&yearsMarried=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familyId=&ageInMonths=&pager.offset=200

    In 1911 Census . . . (see below )

    _______________________________________________________________________--

More food for thought Frank . . .

Cheers . . . Eamonn  ( the weeds in my garden beckon me )

Thank you Eamon for staying with me.  I will answer your questions one at a time.

I am aware of the 28 year old John Lynch in Wellington County Ontario, Canada - he is not my GG GF.  I found what I strongly believe is my John Lynch on the 1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Wentworth County, Sub District Ancaster, p. 102, line 16 (his wife Mary line 17 and son John line 18). Ancaster is very close to the Village of Indiana.

I have evidence of my GG GF being employed by David Thompson in 1852 in the Village of Indiana, Seneca Township, Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada.  John Lynch was a tenant farmer who worked for the Thompson family for 44 years.  All this time he lived in the Village of Indiana which was (it is now a ghostown) on the Grand River which leads into Lake Erie not far from Buffalo.  My GG GF and GG GM (Mary Farrell) are buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Cayuga, Ontario.

I live in the Greater Toronto area, Ontario, Canada.  The three daughters of John Lynch that raised my mother until she was 16 yo are Bridget Lynch, Ellen Lynch (my G GM) and Anna (Johanna) Lynch.  All of these women were born in Canada.

Again I have circumstantial evidence that my GG GF had brothers Michael (born October 11, 1837) and James as well as a sister Bridget (born December 20, 1841).  I know they were born in Tipperary.  It is my work on Ancestry.ca that places them in the Parish of Ballyneale. My Family Tree name on Ancestry is Francis M. Bradley Family Tree.

Once Again Eamonn thank you for the gifts of your time and talent as I search for the names of the siblings and parents of my GG GF John Lynch (abt. 1824 - 1896).

  • Ancaster and Wellington County are pretty much next to each other, aren't they?I live in Burlington, Ontario.

One thing I have noticed in the records of the Catholic church is if your name is James, they enter it as Jacobus. If your name is Mary, they enter Maria. As well, I notice many of the priest had terrible handwriting and also couldn't spell. I also think some of them may have been drinking judging by the quality of the records they kept.

That being said, I'd like to reach to Eamonn who has done a fantastic job on getting this information, and ask him to please look into my ggg grandfather Thomas Madden, who immigrated to Newfoundland from Ballyneale, Tipperary around 1793.

Now when I look at the map, I see there are two Ballyneal(es) - one right beside Carrick-on-Suir, the other south of it. That is curious. Which Ballyneale did my ggg grandfather come from?
