My great great grandmother, Honora Guidera married Timothy Ryan in Cournaganeen church in 1851 and they had 8-9 children.  They resided in or around Timoney.  I'm searching for The namesof Honora's parents.  Thank you.

  • Hi Deidre,

The record of the marriage which is on rootsireland.ie is attached. The year is 1856 but the parish is Cournaganeen.

rootsireland is a pay site so you will need to purchase the record in order to get the parents' names.

Records cost about $5 I think.

  • Hi Deidre

I have looked up the family of Timothy Ryan and Honora Guidera

    Children

    John 1854

    Grace 1856

    Patrick 1857

Michael and Patrick 1858 first Patrick may have died.

    Timothy 1859

John 1860 first John may have died

    Mary 1861

    Andrew 1863

Mary and Catherine1864 first Mary may have died

    Jeremiah 1866

    James 1870

    Thomas 1872

In the 1901 and 1911 census there is two Timothy Ryan?s living in the townsland of Cappalahan Timoney. I think they are both cousins, they are both 86 in the 1911census and both have lost their wife?s. One is the father of John who is head of family and the other is father to Joseph who is head of that family. As there is no Joseph in the family above the one with John is the most likely.

I?m still trying to confirm the right Guider family that Honora came from for you, I think the may have came from Cullahill Couraguneen Bourney.

We are having a group meeting on the 23rd of July and I will try to get as much info as possible for you on her parents

  • Hi Col,

Thanks very much for that.  I actually have that record from Roots Ireland (I said 1851 but yes, it's 1856)

I also bought a lot of the couple's children's baptism and death records - a few died young due to TB.

Thanks for your help and have a good day,

  • Hi Tim,

    Thanks very much for that.

I also have a list of children similar to your list.  I bought a lot of them on RootsIreland.  Joseph is actually my great-grandfather - did not find his record on rootsireland but on family search (born 1868, I think) so on the 1911 census, he's the one.  (Incidentally, his son, James Joseph, born 1899, known as Jim Ryan, my grandfather, wrote a book in 1980 valled "History and Traditions of Knock and Timoney".

I will look into that townland called Cullahill.

Thanks very much for your help and have a good day.

  • Deirdre here again,

Her 1st daughter was called Grace so with naming patterns at the time, I'm wondering if Honora's mother could have been called Grace (who married a Guidera)???

  • Hi Deirdre

We had our meeting on the 26th of July last and we discussed your post. We discussed all Guidera names in our parish and we think that your Guidera came from Cullahill in Bourney parish. I checked other Guidera families that are possibly related also.

Guidera names that are taken from 1901/1911 census.

    Honora  b   -----     m Timothy Ryan 1851 Living in Cappalahan    Timoney 1901

Johanna b  1830   m Patrick Costigan 1859  Living in Clonakenny    Bourney West 1901

Michael b  1831   m Margaret Burke 1864 Living in Kyleannagh     Bourney West 1901

Mary     b  1833   not married                    Living in Cullahill            Bourney East   1901

John      b  1835 m Bridget Walsh 1874 no family, Living in Cullahill Bourney East 1901

    Patrick b 1839 Rockforest Timoney

Timothy b 1841 Ballykelly Timoney Bourney East

It is possible that Honora is related to the Guidera families in Ballykelly and Rockforest in Timoney but I think she is related to the family in Cullahill.

I think Honora was possibly a sister to the names above, as her husband Timothy Ryan was born 1831 she might be a few years younger so same age as family above.

In the Griffiths valuation records 1850s the names of John and Patrick Ginder is shown to hold lands in Cullahill, we think this may be a misspelling and that the name is Guider or Guidera. I think that one of these men John or Patrick is the father of the family above.

On Roots Ireland I found information that might help you with your search, you would need to buy some certs to be able to find more info to carry on.

Here is info I have on the Guidera families to date I found.

Patrick Guidera m to Judith Bergin in 1838 in Couraguneen RC (Bourney) I found that they had three children baptised in Couraguneen RC,

    Patrick      b 1840

    Anne        b 1843

    Catherine b 1845

Michael Guidera m Catherine Tracy 1857 Couraguneen RC, 2 children

    Eliza 1858

    John 1859

Michael Guidera m Sarah Costigan 1859 Couraguneen RC, 5 Children

    John 1862

    Grace 1863

    Denis 1866

    Mary 1875

    Joseph 1876

Michael Guidera m Margaret Burke living in Kyleannagh Bourney west married in Templemore RC

    Mary 1865

    Sarah 1866

    Daniel 1867

    Johanna 1870

Michael 1872   Got uncles place in Cullahill

    Margaret 1876

    Thomas 1877

James 1878    Lived in Cullahill with brother and uncle

    Edward 1879

    Bridget 1880

You asked if Hanora?s mother could be called Grace, I think that name came from the Ryan side of the family as it was usually the custom that the eldest girl would be called after the father side of the family. Also if you look at the two Timothy Ryan Families in Cappalahan Timoney 1911 census that I think are related, the name Grace are in both leading me to believe that Grace came from the Ryan?s and not the Guidera?s.

I still haven?t found proof of the name of Hanora?s father and mother but the info we have gathered might go a long way to finding them.

I have your Grandfathers book its very good, we are hoping to put it up on our history page under Books of the Parish.

    Good luck with your search.

  • Hello Terry,

    So we're related!

Sorry I've been away from here for such a long time - nearly two years.

I went off doing another family tree - my mother's side and just finished it -

well - not finished yet - will never be but having a break.

    So how are we related?

My father was Joseph Ryan from Cullawn Roscrea - His brother, Paul Ryan,

published a 2nd book of poetry last Thursday.

  • Wondering what ever happened to this conversation.  I recently learned that I have a connection to this Ryan clan.  Ancestry DNA matching provided a link to a family tree that connects my great great grandfather to Timothy Ryan.  It appears as though they may be brothers. My GGG imigrated to America around 1847 and we had no knowledge of his origin until now. I'm looking for any information that you can provide.

  • Hello Charly.

I haven't been up to much on research for the Guidera-Ryan clan for about 4 years now;  What was your GGG's first name?

    Deirdre,

Thanks for responding so quickly.  My GG grandfather was Patrick Frank Ryan (born circa March 1819).  As I mentioned in my earlier post, Patrick Ryan immigrated to Chicago around 1847.  All records in Chicago were destroyed in the great fire of 1871 so I cannot look to historical documents for any information.  My recent DNA match is a Browne descendant of Joseph Ryan / Mary Breen.  The DNA match is relaitvely strong and places my Browne match at a 3rd cousin once removed.  Mr. Browne has a robust Ancestry tree that includes Timothy's uncle, James Ryan.  The inclusion of James Ryan is significant because I built a separate family tree for the James Ryan clan because have several DNA matches with descendants of James Ryan.  I was unaware of the James Ryan clan's existance prior to matching DNA and I could never make a definiative connection to my family.  The James Ryan clan principally settled in Sandusky, Ohio, USA.  Based on DNA math and Browne's family tree I was able to determine my GG grandfather's place in the family.

Did you ever create a family tree that would  be accessable through a genealogical web site?  I would love to see what you have.  I also read in your post on another site that you were collecting birth records for the 15 children of Timothy and Hanora.  Can you share that information with me.  Browne's tree does not show all 15 children.

I attached a small high level tree that shows Timothy and Patrick.  I fall below Frank Patrick, son of Patrick Frank.

I lookd forward to hearing from you.

    Best,

    Charles Ryan

  • Hello Charles,

Thank you for all of that information!  You have just rekindled my passion for research!!!  I've just resigned up with ancestry.com.

My situation is that I moved from Ireland to France in 1984 and married a French military and settled down there.  Between 2009 and 2013, I unearthed a lot of information about the Tipperary (Timoney, Cournaganeen, Roscrea) Ryan ancestors, printed them out and have them stored in a big green box in my house in Metz, France.  As a helicopter pilot with the French army, my husband, Olivier, was sent (with me) to Djibouti, Africa, in July 2017 until next July 2020...  So, here I am without the big green box trying to remember info. on the research...  (very frustrating).  I'll be heading back to France for a holiday in August or September this year so I'll definitely send you on what I have.  In the meantime, if I come across anything of interest, could you please send me on your e-mail address?  I have a few leads in my head right now.

By the way, Joseph Ryan and Mary Breen were my gggrand-parents.  James, their son, my grandfather, born 1899 - died 1988.

Looking forward to hearing from you real soon!

  • Deirdre,

I think I found you and your tree on Ancestry.  Is your Ancestry user name "EYNAUDD" and is your tree name "Ryan Family Tree"?  If I am correct I can provide my email address directly through the internal Ancestry message system.  I am very excited to learn more about the Tipperary Ryan's.

  • I am with the Guideras who came over with John Guidera in the late 1800s to New York.  In 1911, an article said he had 6 brothers back in Ireland and 3 sisters that came to New York.  One, we believe, was Sarah who came to New York and later became Sister Euthropia.  We had that John's parents were Michael and Catherine Treacy (Tracy?).  Sarah (Sister Euthropia) listed her Mom as Margaret Bourke (Burke).  We are trying to resolve this discepancy.  We saw this related post.  Is it possible that Michael Guidera remarried?  Can anyone help us with this?  Is it the same Michael Guidera with two different wives and families?

    Any help would be appreciated!!!!
