1. Great great grandfather - Patrick Beary, born Garnavilla (Caher) circa 1860.
2. Grandfather - Eugene Beary - born in Clonmel, moved to the USA briefly then back to Liverpool.
3. Father - Kevin Eugene - born Liverpool circa 1924
4.Myself - Shane Kevin Beary - born Dublin 1952, family moved to Africa in 1954, I just returned and am living in Clonmel.

Any assistance, guidance much appreciated.

Regards

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie. has an 1860 baptismal record for a Patrick Beary in the Ardfinnan RC records. Ardfinnan is south of Caher.  Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

I looked at the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Bearys in Co. Tipperary. I did not see a Eugene so maybe he was in England or America.

  • Not sure if you have some of these details already, but just in case they might fill in a few gaps in the timeline...

There's a 1922 birth showing on FreeBMD of a Kevin Beary in West Derby registration district which is in Lancashire and covers parts of Liverpool. Mother's maiden name is Cribben, and three years earlier in 1919 there's a possible marriage of the parents in the same district - a  Eugene Beary  and a Blanche M Gribbin (with a 'G') with the same references on the marriage index. Certs can be ordered from the UK GRO (abt £9 STG) which would show more details - shout if you need references and details on ordering.

It seems from Probate listings that Eugene died  8th August 1953 at Northern Hospital Liverpool, without a Will, i.e. an administration, and his widow, Blanche Mary is mentioned. Eugene's usual residence is shown as 60 Edge Lane-Drive Liverpool, and on FreeBMD his age at death is reported as 58, so born c1895.

There's a possible match for Eugene returning to England in 1931 on the Cunard ship Scythia. He's listed as a Salesman with about the right age, and an address at Edinburgh Rd., Kensington, Liverpool.

There are also details of him arriving in New York in April 1929 on the Samaria, from Liverpool. This shows Eugene as born Clonmel I.F.S. (Irish Free State) and age 33 which fits, with occupation Grocer's assistant.  Also with him on this journey are wife Blanche and three children ranging in age from 3 to 8, including Kevin in the middle. Blanche's place of birth is shown as Douglas I.O.M. (Isle of Man) and all three children born Liverpool.

I dont see a likely BMD Index reference for Eugene's birth here in Ireland at the moment, but will check further...

  • I located Blanche age 13 on the 1911 census in  Christian Road Douglas, with her mother Elizabeth a widow and boarding house keeper. Also in the household at the time are her two brothers Edward age 15 and James age 9, and a sister Eileen age 17. Elizabeth is shown as born Liverpool, all the children born 'Isle of Man'

The 1901 census shows the family with Blanche age 3 along with her mother and father James. His occupation is is difficult to read, but he's shown as an employer rather than 'worker'. Also shown in the household are additonal children Ideline 8 and Letitia age 1, and also Edward Gribben brother of James, and also a border and a servant. Birthplace for James is given as Douglas.

Tipperary and Co. Waterford. I havn't figured out the parents names yet, but father is not matching Pat or Patrick...

  • the 1911 English census shows the same Beary family as in Lancashire, with Eugene age 15 born Clonmel. His mother's place of birth is transcribed (I havn't seen the census form yet) as Arosfinane, Co. Tipperary, and his father's as 'Garnaville' Co. Tipperary... which was mentioned in your post, but for the name Patrick.. The age given for James is 38, which is consistent with the 1901 returns and would give an estimated year of birth a bit of abt 1873

There are some other possible records for Eugene showing up, including something relating to the Army just after WW1... which I'll follow up later

  • Hi Shanew147,

    Many thanks for this.
It all helps. Am trying to contact Mary Grace now in her late 80's and lining in the UK.
Apparently she was a relative and sold the Beary family home in Caher a while back.
No contacts made yet for Beary's in Clonmel.

    Regards

  • Hi Shanew147,

That is them alright, my father Kevin was Eugene's son.
I am in contact with family members in the UK, but they lack information on the Clonmel, Caher link.

I have some information that a Patrick Beary born (Garnaville Caher) - 1860?  married Mary ............
Their children were: Patrick, Eugene (My grandfather), Mary, William, Margaret.)

  • I think maybe the information you have skips a generation or has crossed with a brother ?

Based on what I've seen Father of the Eugene that matched your more recent details is James, and his mother was Margaret.. Maybe Eugene was a family name and there was another, possibly a cousin to 'your' Eugene ?

p.s. the children's names, and sequence that you mentioned fit quite well with that Beary family on the 1901 and 1911 census mentioned above

  • Hi Shanew147

Many thanks. Most helpful. You could well be right on skipping a generation or crossing with a brother.
I'll copy this to my sister Karen who has done more research than I have as see if she can provide some more info.

    Really appreciated,
    Regards
