My Drom Heritage

I am a volunteer with Ireland xo.

I checked the Drom parish records with the parish priest, Fr Murphy.

We found the record of your great great grandparents, James Ryan & Mary Burke's  marriage, it actually gives the date of Feb 12th 1810.

There is 2 yrs in the difference but we know it is correct because the witnesses are the same, Phil Ryan and Thomas Burke.

We then looked at the baptisimal records to see if we could locate any of their children whose names you had listed.

Unfourtunately we were unable to find any records which lead us to beleive that the family moved to a different parish, possibly  Upperchurch or Loughmore.

I intend to contact the local priests in these parishes and when I have any further information I will let you know.

Thank you for your investigative work. I agree that the 1810 date must be the correct date for the marriage.

As you proceed with your research I thought it pertinent to mention that all of the children were born in Curraduff except Edmund, who was born in Ivy Hall. If there is a Catholic church near Curraduff, the records we are seeking may be there. As you know, I have the dates of their baptism already. Moreover, I am very much interested in the fate of the children, i.e., when and whether they married and to whom. We know that my Great-Grandfather Thomas Ryan emigrated to St. Louis, MO USA around 1850; he married Anne Fogarty, daughter of Charles Fogarty and Ellen Shortall, in October, 1855 in St. Louis. I suspect that one or more of his brothers also emigrated and settled in St. Louis; others may have stayed in N. Tipperary and married there. Is there any possibility that such marriage records could be located? 

I do appreciate your very valuable assistance in the history of my family. I stand ready to help in any way that I can, e.g., I have a few clues here regarding possible marriages of Thomas' brothers. One such possiblity relates to a marriage between John Ryan and Ellen Meagher (Maher) in 1841 in Templederry (RC). Our John Ryan is the first-born (13 May 1812) of James Ryan & Mary Burke. In 1841 he would have been 29. His age and the date of the marriage have a reasonable juxtaposition; still, without the name of the respective parents it is difficult to know if this "John Ryan" is the son of James and Mary.

I have been using the rootsireland website for a couple of years and, yes, it's very, very helpful. I have learned quite a bit about my family through the website.

Let's hope that your enquiries regarding Loughmre and Upperchurch bear fruit.

Were you able to follow up on the John Ryan/Ellen Meagher (Maher) marriage at Templederry that I mentioned in my last message. I realize that Templederry is very close to Drom. I think this might be a very valuable clue.

Again, thank you for your assistance with my Family Tree. My brother and sisters here in the states are anticipating any news that clarifies our family's heritage.

Jackie, I'm back online. Rose and I are planning a triptoi Ireland in September. We plan to visit Drom and Curraduff. We would appreciate any information and/or advice as to where to begin inquiries regarding our Irish family. Recall that James Ryan and Mary Burke were married in Drom in 1810. Records of all their offspring show their place of Baptism in Curraduff (sp?).      The names of all their children are found in the information I posted in 2012 (scroll up). Thomas, born in 1814 is my paternal great-great grandfather. He arrived at the port of New Orleans on 11 May 1852 on the ship Essex. From New Orleans, he sailed up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri where he married Ann Fogarty in October, 1855, widowed as a result of the death of her first husband, William Ryan (cousin of Thomas) who died in 1853. 1. My great grandfather Thomas Ryan was born in 1814. He left for the USA c. 1852.    His parents were James and Mary Ryan (maiden name Burke). Thomas had a number of siblings including John, James, Michael, Patrick, Anne, and Edmund. Thomas was from the Curraduff area near Templemore.

1. The Tipperary North Family History Research Service in Nenagh provided the family record. Included therein is Thomas’ baptisimal record: 02.03.1814. 

   The parents’ record of marriage in the Catholic Parish of Drom is listed as 12.02.1812.   

    Ireland XO stated that the year should have been 1810,  the source

    identified as the priest at Drom Catholic Church; day and month are  the same).

1. My great grandfather Thomas emigrated to Saint Louis, Missouri USA. One record of passage that seems credible identifies a Tom Ryan arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana on the ship Essex from Liverpool, England on 11 May 1852. Noted on the manifest is his stated destination of Saint Louis, Missouri USA.   

    Thomas married Anne Fogarty (daughter of Charles Fogarty and Ellen Shortall, of 

    N.Ireland) on 15 October 1855 at St. Thomas the Apostle and Evangenlist Church in

    Saint Louis, Missouri. Anne was a widow whose husband, William Ryan, died only 

    two years after their marriage in Saint Louis on 18 September 1853 at the same

    church where Thomas and Anne were married in 1855.        

    William Ryan was the son of Michael Ryan and Mary Connelly of N.Ireland. I believe   

    that William and Thomas were first cousins; that Michael Ryan was the brother of 

    James Ryan, Thomas’ father.

   Thomas and Anne Ryan had several children. Their order of birth follows below:

    Mary Ellen - 1 Feb. 1857; Charles - 11 Aug. 1858; James - 2 July 1860; John         Patrick - 6 July 1862; Bridget (Delia) - 23 May 1864; Charles - 22 Oct. 1866;         Dennis J - 14 Nov. 1868; Margaret Anne - 14 Nov. 1868.

    Thomas and Anne also adopted Johann Agnes Cleary in the late 1870’s. Agnes’         parents were James Cleary & Bridget Russell. Agnes was born 26 May 1872.

Jackie, Roseand I will be in Templemore at the Templemore Arms next Sunday, Oct. 9. We plan to spend 4 or 5 days in order to visit Drom, Curraduff and, of course, Templemore. I am very interested in collecting dates (tombstones, records, etc.) as well as determining the fates of my great-grandfather Thomas' five brothers and sister (listed above in my very first post).

The best latest FREE site to open up is irishgenealogy.ie (Irish government initiative) where you can get to see and print off the actual Irish civil birth marriage and death records for Ireland under the 100 year since Birth, 75 year since Marriage and 50 year since death rules.

Hi my name is Linda Fogarty Stief. My Grandparents were from Thurles county Tipperary. Their names were Edmond and Bridget Fogarty. I saw the names as John’s baptism sponsors I’m wondering if they are my ancestors.  I am also from Saint Louis MO and just got back from Ireland. I found many cousins there and am now looking for my great grandmothers (Bridget) birth and death certificates. I’m not sure where to go from here. Also Bishop Omeara was an Ancestor of mine. I believe he was a 3rd cousin. He was the son of either Edmond or Bridget’s sister. If you can help in anyway I would really appreciate it.
