I looked at the parish register for 1838 and located the record. The name was Mary Rea.

I searched on FindMyPast.ie and did not see any baptismal records for siblings.

Record for Emly RC parish started in 1810 so if Michael Callaghan Sr. was from that parish and born around 1800, a record would not exist.

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Emly civil parish shows three Rea records but no Callaghan records.

Thank you Roger for your efforts. I have the birth certificate you mentioned but I also have a marriage record for a Michael Callaghan and a Mary Reagh. The timing seems off so I am not sure if either are correct. I also have a birth for Mary with Callaghan/Rea parents in Cashel in 1831 and a John in Emly in 1834. My working theory now is that they moved from cashel to Emly between 1831-34. I have not used findmypast - I will give that a try

Hi.

There were at least 3 births to this couple in Emly (john 1834; john 1836 and Michael 1838). Rea was often spelt Ray or Wray so search using the various spellings. Likewise, Callaghan can be spelt calahan or callahan.

Thank you.  I was not aware of the 1836 birth,  I have tried every spelling I can think of which is part of my problem.  I will try to get the '34 birth info - sounds like a child who died in infancy

Did any of your family stay in Ireland? If they left, where did they go? Do you have Marriage/ Births/ Death dates would be useful. Who did Michael marry? If its the US, sometimes you can find info on death records, marriage records, birth records, and censuses. I have found Ancestry and FamilySearch(free) to be useful.

Do you know approximately when Mary and Michael died? Irishgenealogy (free) might have a record.

You probably already tried all of this but I thought I would suggest.

Thanks so much for your help.  I did have most of that nformation but it reminded me that I want to see if I can find anything on the Bridget Rae who was a sponsor.  I know 'everything' about my great grandfather and his descendents but I don;t know anything about his siblings.  I contacted a dna relatve in Australia and he pointed me to an Honor Callaghan.  She may have been a gg aunt but I can't find anything definitive on her,  I don't know when my GG Grandparents died.  I found an entry in Griffiths for a Mary Callaghan renting a house in Emly so I imagine my GG Grandfather was dead at that time bit I haven;t found anything to document that.  I also can;t find them in the St Ailbe graveyard so I will have to look to see if I can find them nearby.  I have linked several of my dna relatives to my father;s side but I haven;t been able to determine if any of them are Callaghan descendants.

I plan on visiting Emly for a few hours when I am over there in June.  I doubt that I will have tome to do any research but I am anxious to see the town/area.

Don't be discouraged. I have ancestors buried in St. Ailbe in unmarked graves. Have you researched gravesites/ cemeteries through Historicgraves (free)?

In 1834, there was a William Rea living in Emly Village. Maybe connected to Bridget? The other sponsor was Mary Slattery.

There were a John and Thomas Slattery in 1834 living in Ballinvreena, Emly amd a John Slattery living in Ballycurrane, Emly.

Mary Slattery (maiden name Hanley) could be the wife of John Slattery. They got married in Emly in 1825??

I was in Emly in 2003. The town is very picturesque and the residents are helpful and friendly. St. Ailbe is a beautiful church.

Thanks.  I wasn't able to find anything on the graves site and haven' yet found anything more on the Rea family.  I beleive my family were poor laborers so I am not surpried that I can't find a hradstone anywhere.  The current church was built after my family left but I understand the church hall is the previous church building - I am looking forward to seeing both

I just wanted to let you know that I am exploring the possibility that my Great Grandfather had a brother - John Calahan - who married Ellen Browne in Emly and had 4 children.  I believe Catherine married Denis Daly and lived in Clashdrumsmith.  I haven't been able to find any other information but it would be interesting to see if another branch of my family tree survived

Thanks for your efforts Mary.  I will definitely get back on Roots Ireland before my trip.  I have mentioned to others how many times the same names and places appear.  I need to do some research on the various witnesses to see if they are or turn into relatives.

Thank you again for your efforts on my behalf.  I had seen the first record but not the second, which specified Michael as the Father and Johanna as the witness.  Michael and Johanna were the names of my great grandparents but they were in Chicago in 1885.  I wonder who the people at the wedding were.  Once again too many people with the same name in the same town.

In regards to Ellen Callaghan, Baptised 23 July 1868 - Informant/Sponsor is James Kirby; James Kirby is no doubt my grgr grandmother's brother. They were residents of Emly. My grgr grandmother immigrated to the USA, but James stayed in Emly with his parents and a couple of other siblings. The name Callahan/Callaghan rang a bell with me so I looked up the baptismal reecords I have on the Kirbys. Michael Kirby born 1833 - Sponsor #1 Dermot Callaghan, #2 Mary Murphy. Another sibling is John Kirby, born 1830 - Sponsor #1 John Callaghan, #2 JNA Callaghan. I also have a copy of the baptismal registry for sibling Daniel Kirby and on the opposite page is the record of an Ellen Casey - Father John Casey, mother Margaret Walsh?, Sponsor #1 is William Callahan #2 Barbara Casey. I would say our families were very familiar with one another!

My daughter and her husband were in Ireland in March of this year and spent  one afternoon in Emly. They found the gravestone of Daniel Kirby's family at St. Ailbe's cemetery, and had a wonderful time downtown at a local tea room. 

Now I have thrown more names into your search, but I hope you are successful in your endeavor. Kim B.

Thank you.  I have searched the Emly cemetary websites and I don't think any of the marked graves are for my family.  Given what little I know, I am not surprised that they don't have a headstone.

I am also working with someone form the Emly Historical Society and I have emailed Fr Rochford to see if I can meet with him for a while while I am there in June. I am also trying to find out how to add my famiy's name to the emigrant wall.   Do you know if they have death registers for the patis?  All I have seen so far are baptisms and weddings

Thank you for the link to the census.  I had not realized the population had fallen so far so fast.  While my great grandparents were gone by then, it does list a John that I will need to research,  I am still trying to figure out where he may have lived and if/when he may have emigrated.  I have book marked the site for future use.

I visited Emly on June 21st and had a wonderful time,  Thanks you to John of the Historical Society, Fr Rochford, and to Helena for coordinating the visit.  I will try to post a few photos in the Buildings section

I visited Emly the following week. Everyone I met were generous with their time and very gracious. I visited The Kinkead farm in Lackelly. The farm next to that farm was originally the Fitzgerald farm. Although Lackelly is in Limerick, it was considered part of Emly Parish, Tipperary.

Edmond Michael Fitzgerald (1855-1936) parents were Michael Fitzgerald and Ann Bourke. He married Ellen Kinkead of Lackelly (1858-1917) in 1880. Ellen was the daughter of Samuel Kinkead and Elizabeth Mitchell. Edmond and Ellen went to America in 1880 and when Ellen became pregnant in 1881, Edward sent her back to Ireland for the birth of their son (Joseph) Michael Fitzgerald.

Edmond was the oldest son so he inherited the farm. His sister, Margaret Fitzgerald, married Patsy Callahan and they took over the family farm when Edmond left Ireland.

I am not sure during your visit if you found a connection to this Callahan family.

Thank you for this information.  I don't know of a link to Limerick but as you say it is close to Emly town. I think I may be at a dead end until I happen upon a dna match who knows their family tree.  Not overly hopeful but it did happen with my wife's family so it can happen
