Looking for relatives of Margaret Oldfield (c.1843 - 1936), whose family left Ireland in 1849 and settled at Covey Hill, Hemmingford, Canada East (Quebec). Margaret and a sister survived the crossing, but at least four other children died at sea. In the 1851 Canada East Census, just three Oldfields appear in Hemmingford - Micke Oldfield (born c.1797, Ireland), Mary Oldfield (born c.1801, Ireland and Allias Oldfield (born c.1829 in Ireland).

These may be members of Margaret's family. In the 1861 Canada East Census, Margaret Oldfield (age18) is the only Oldfield living in Hemmingford, and appears to be living with a William Churchill family. William Churchill (1801 - 1868) was a farmer from Ballybeg, Littleton, Tipperary, and I'm wondering if there could have been a connection between our Oldfield family and this Churchill family back in Ireland. Oldfield was not a common name in Ireland, but the mid-19C survey and distribution of Irish names showed that there were 5 Oldfield families living in County Tipperary. In chain migrations, emigrants often followed family or friends from home to settlements in their new country. Margaret Oldfield married David Scott (1837 - 1912) on February 28,1867 in Montreal, Quebec and lived most of her life in that part of Quebec. Is there a way of checking Oldfield families (especially Michael and Mary Oldfield) who might have emigrated to Canada from Tipperary around 1849? Any suggestions/leads appreciated.

  • Hi Richard,
The only Oldfield I found in Twomileborris Tipperary was Humphrey Oldfield, lived in the townland of Ballydavid. This was in 1823.

  • Hi Richard, I descend from the Templederry Tipperary Oldfields who we believe came to Ireland from England about 1646. John Oldfield b.circa 1790 to d.October 1857 age 67 at Castle Otway Templederry.. had 7 children that we know of: Richard Oldfield b 8th June 1816 ( I have no info on him),Henry Oldfield b. 2nd May 1818 ( not much on him), William Oldfield b. 1st February 1820 (according to Oldfield family bible kept by my Gr Gr/F John since 1876...some record William's birth as either 1821 or 1822) he married Jane Shouldice (1824-1890) 18th April 1845. They moved to Tuckersmith Huron, Ontario and buried at Egmondville United Cemetery, Huron County Ontario. Their eldest child Margaret/ Maggie born in Tipperary 1843 and died in Quebec 1936. I think she married /surname Scott. Hopefully this the Margaret you are looking for. There were 8 more kids after Margaret, After William (1820-5th Dec. 1883) then came John Oldfield 22nd July, married Mary Kennedy from Co. Waterford- d. 8th October 1901 buried Templederry Tipperary and this is who I descend from. They had 13 kids, the youngest William b Templederry/Tipperary1879-d New Zealand1944 is who I descend from. William had 2 sons John Phillip 1914-1991 and Patrick James 1916-2007 who I descend from Then came Jane Oldfield b,1st May 1826 married Thomas Lynott 1866. Number 6 child was James b.12th June 1828 married Catherine Dwyer at Kilmore, Co. Tip 1855. They had 7 boys and 7 girls (12 we can account for ) but 3 died in the one week from Scarlet fever 1870 in Templederry. James was the post master at Templederry, liked his alcohol but after the tragedy of his 3 kids he got worse and they made a new start > arriving Hells Kitchen Manhattan NY 1885..he died 1896 NY. The last & seventh child we know of John Oldfield 1790-1857 is Samuel b.1st January 1840 > came to NZ died in accident 15th May 1895 (know a great deal on him) A descendant of this Samuel; Sonia White has much about the Templederry/Tipperary Oldfields much of which she got from me and you can search on the public trees. E mail me on tcyoung@xtra.co.nz for further info.

Kind regards Clair Young nee Oldfield of New Zealand
