Hi Robin.

If you check the Census Ireland 1911 in the townland of Uskane and area of Drumnamahane Island you will find Patrick and Mary Brophy and five children John Sarah William Patrick and Edward and see what you think.

I would have known Edward who passed away some time back and also his sons and daughter all still living thankfully ,Edward I know was buried in Modreeny graveyard and also I believe other members of his family.

Because of the common first names running through the family it  could be the correct ancestors.

You could log onto the irishfamilyhistoryfoundation website and input your names.  Start broad and gradually refine your search.  I found 4 patrick Brophys in North Tipperary.   You would need to narrow down the field by using the parish search bar and just view the one that has the greatest potential to be your ancestor.  The website is free to join and peruse and you just pay to view a particular record.  These are all the parish records on this site.

I would love to be connected to some real Irish Brophys!!!  I believe that my Patrick's father is definitely John.  For the Giffiths Eval from 1847-1864 I find Edward Brophy leasing land from Henry Ely in Eminiska, John leasing land from Lord Dunalley in Loughan and a Martin who is also leasing land from Lord Dunalley in Loughan.  Patrick had someone named Edward Brophy living with him in Newburgh NY for a few years.  He was born bet. 1805-1810 which would fit with him being a brother of Patrick's father John.   I would love to find some answers.  I am not positive of when Patrick came over though.  His first child is born in 1866 in Newburgh.

I found a baptism for a Patrick Brophy on the No. Tipperary Genealogical Center site.  He was baptised on 2 Aug 1836 in Roscrea district.  This could be him.  Parents are John Brophy and Mary Darcy.  One of the sponsors was a Thomas Brophy which is a family name.  John and Mary Darcy Brophy also have another baptism listed for a Daniel Brophy on 30 Jan 1835.  Living in Newburgh in the 1868 Newburgh city directories is a Daniel Brophy and later census say he would be abt. the right age as the one above.  Also  in 1868 there is a Martin Brophy listed too.  Lots of similarities.  

I did find Patrick's naturalization papers in NY and the name used is J. Patrick Brophy.  This is why I am thinking that maybe his first name is John like his father but is known by his middle name.  Thanks again for your email.

It sure seems as if we are talking about the same family as Eminska and Loughan are both within a mile radius of both Modreeny and Drumnamahane .

Modreeny area contains an old unused Roman Catholic and a Church of Ireland one the one where Brophy's buried is in the grounds of the RC one and if I get the time will take a trip over later in the week  to examine some of the headstones and will pass anything relevant , incidentally my grandparents were married in that church around 1906 .

The are around there is rich and fertile farming land the nearest town Borrisokane (pop 1000) is approx five  miles away and Cloughjordan quite close also.

Lough Derg is approx 15 miles to the north west and is a very popular tourist spot with a lot of fishing sailing and water sports the village of Terryglass where I was born is right beside the lake and is a very attractive spot.

Checked Ellis Island records and the only Brophy I could find from anywhere near was Annie Brophy from a slightly mispelt Borrisokane who travelled to New York on Oct 1 1900  she was aged 23.

I would love to know the graveyard transcriptions of the Brophys in the RC cemetery as mine were devout Catholics. If possible could you take photos of the gravestones and email them to me? We do that over here. Works great. Patrick was married twice. The names he gave his children were Mary, Bridget, John, Edward, Elizabeth, Harry Aloysius, Thomas and William. His wives names were Mary and Catherine. Of Catherine and Patricks children only Elizabeth is a family name on her side bring Catherine's mother so Harry Thomas and William may be Brophy names. The Modreeny area sounds beautiful and I hope in the next few years I can travel there to see it. Patricks wife Catherine Kirwan was from Latteragh area of Tipperary.

No. Unfortunately for me I have many Irish lines and none of them really spoke of Ireland. My family is not very history driven and since most came over in famine years they were poor and most were illiterate. I have Kirwan, Vicars/Vickers who are Catholic in the Latteragh area. I have PEEL/PILES in the Cootehill Co. Cavan.  I have SCOTT from Co. Derry.  BROWN and MOORE from who knows where. DENNEGAN from ?. COYLE and FARELLY/FARRELL from Cavan. I do remember my mother telling me there were Brophy relatives in Brooklyn that they used to visit. My grandfather was Harry Aloysius Brophy. He was Patricks son and was born in 1882. He died in 1865 when I was very young. I don't remember him very well. All older relatives are deceased as us my mother and her brother. I did find a Pat Brophy on the 1823-1837 Tithe Applitment books living in Forty Acres Modreeny.

Do a search on Utube "Ed Brophy and friends"  it is of Edward Brophy recorded in Paddy's pub Terryglass 

Quality is not great give it a try anyway.

Going with one of the Brophy clan to Modreeny/Grawn cemetary will send you relevant photos.

Thanks for directing me to the video of Ed Brophy.  My husband and I love Irish music.  In fact, when we were dating we used to go every year to an Irish Festival in East Durham NY.  Its quite big.  We actually got engaged there!

I am so excited to find out who is buried in the Modreeny cemetery.  Thank you so much for doing this.  Hopefully it will shed some light on things for me.  How do you go about getting a look at Catholic records in Ireland.  I know years ago you had to get ahold of the priests.  Some records are online.  Do you know how far back Modreeny parish records go?  

You know, from what I was told, most Irish catholics in the mid 1850s that emigrated to Newburgh were from Co. Tipperary.  There were quite a few Ryans in the area?  Any of your folk come this way that you know of?
