Looking for information on my Burgess ancestors, Bartholomew Burgess (b. circa 1811), and his wife Catherine (nee Perry) Burgess.  Family records indicate that they were from Castlelyons, County Cork, and that they married there in the early 1830s.  Family stories indicate that the marriage was not approved of by their families, so shortly afterwards they emigrating to Rochester, New York, USA, possibly by way of Canada.

  • Hello Tim, a possibility is that the marriage of Bartholomew & Catherine was a mixed marriage so not approved by the families.
www.nationalarchives.ie . 1901 Census has several entries for surnames. Also Griffiths Valuation & Tithe Applotment records.
www.rootsireland.ie has Baptism/Marriage records for Castlelyons area Co Cork.
There is a strong presence of the names in Kilshannig Co Cork which is adjacent to Castlelyons .
