Just a little further info on Kennedy's Ballinderry .

Sylvester's daughter's Bridget, Mary Anne and  Katie between them looked after the post office in Ballinderry probably from the forties fifties and possibly into the sixties .My late Mum Elizebeth Ryan nee Hogan formally of Muchloon was quite friendly with them and based on their ages would have gone to school with them ,she often spoke about them.

A book called "Irish Gold" written by Pamela Hinkson was loosely based on their lives there is a copy of it somewhere in my house which with a little further search  I should be able to locate.

My mother was related to the Kennedy sisters of Ballinderry Post Office.

My great great grandmother was Mary Kennedy.  She married Edward Gaynor in the 1820s.  I have found records for 4 of their children Mary born 1828, Ned 1930, Anne 1833 and Sylvester born 1838 who was my great grandfather.  Their address is recorded in some records as Cloninhey and others as Newlawn.  It is likely that my Mary Kennedy and your Patrick Kennedy were brother and sister.  Sylvester Gaynor and Sylvester Kennedy were likely to have been called after their grandfather and were likely to have been first cousins.

A Hugh Kennedy was sponsor at Mary Gaynor’s baptism.  One of Ned Gaynor’s sponsors was Michael Kennedy and Anne Gaynor’s sponsors were James and Bridget Kennedy and Sylvester Gaynor’s baptism sponsor was Syl Kennedy.

Hi Mary, and many thanks for your post.  How exciting to find a direct link to my family!  The information you have given is very useful indeed, as I am struggling to find accurate information about my Patrick's siblings.  Searches have thrown up possibles from the 1790s and then into the 1830s as well.

One piece of information which did surprise me was that the sons of  Mary and of Patrick named Sylvester were named after their grandfather.  I have only in the past 3 months discovered this family and had Patrick's father named as John.  Could be I have the wrong father and that is why I am struggling with siblings!!   Could you confirm that the father is Sylvester?  I have lots of information on families I believe to be Patrick's cousins and am happy to share this information.  Also a stack of information on the family and descendants after they arrived in England, including a couple of mysteries and a case of my Grandfather breaking the law by telling lies on his marriage certificate, which cost me 3 years of  misdirected researchlooking for the death of his father.  Email me on
