My 2nd great grandmother is Alice Gleason, born in Tipperary in 1843.  She emigrated to the U.S. around 1858.  Her father's name was James Gleason and her mother's name was Mary (maiden name unknown).  In the U.S., she married Miles Forbes in 1861 or so in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Do you have any other information regarding Alice? Of particular importance would be a placename in Tipperary. If you could find out the name of the parish that she lived in, it would greatly help you when you are looking for information.

Do you know much about her emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew what city she arrived at it may be a good place to find information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. The US National Archives information on Immigration is a good place to start, you can find it here:

    http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Some other websites that may be of help are the National Library and the National Archives of Ireland found at  http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ respectively.

Also you may want to do a search at https://familysearch.org/

I hope that these links help. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Emma, thanks again for your input.  At this point our info on Alice is scant.  I talked with the 3rd cousin to ask where he got the Tipperary info and it's basically been handed down through his family that they came from there.  We know that's not a solid lelad.

I need to correct her year of birth.  Based on the 1860 U.S. census, she was born around 1837.  The other date came from her burial records here in Cincinnati.  In 1908 it listed her as 65 years, but the census info is more likely correct.  We're thinking she emigrated in the mid 1850's.

For now I leave this out there and update my post when and if we get more info.

  • One new bit of info, scant as well, is a sister Bridget.  I added her based on the death records here in Cincinnati,  plus there are two newspaper pieces noting a lawsuit in the late 1870s: Bridget Gleason v. Alice Forbes. That always suggested to me she was probably family. The written death record shows parents as James Gleason and Mary (surname not stated). Her death certificate notes she was born in County Tipperary.  Bridget was born in 1828, so there's a good size gap between her and Alice.

  • www.familysearch.org (FREE SITE) has a marriage certificate (digital photo) for Miles Forbes and Alice Gleason 3 January 1857 in Hamilton County Ohio.

This site also has the death certificate for their daughter Marie born 12 Sep 1868, died 31 July 1941 (married surname Greene) buried on Aug 4th in St Joseph's New Cemetery. Theis certificate lists Alice's place of birth as Ireland without the county named.

There is also a link to the 1900 US census on the same site.

hcgsohio.org (Hamilton County Geological Society) has public data available and many links.

  • There is a record for the baptism of Bridget Gleeson on Nov 2, 1828 in the parish of Newport.  Her parents were James Gleeson and Mary Carrol, residing in the townland of Garrane.  There are 7 other children's baptisms recorded for the family - but no Alice.  The children are Con, Michael, Sally(Sarah), Daniel, James, Margaret and John.  This may or may not be your Bridget.

The only baptism for an Alice anywhere close to the birth date you have is an Alice baptized 3 july 1836 in the parish of Moycarkey.  Her parents were Michael Gleeson and Mary Connors.  She's indexed as Alice but when you look at the original image, the first name is Ally.

You might want to continue the search in Cincinnati for any Gleeson/Gleason with the names of Bridget's siblings.

It could be that Alice changed her first name when she came to the US, it could be her baptism was never recorded, it could be the indexers missed the baptism or couldn't read the handwriting.  Irish reseach has its challenges.

  • Allie and Alice would be the same name.  Have you done DNA.

There were  Gleeson gatherings in North Tipperary  up to very recently , they may be on Facebook.
