Margaret Ryan married James Collins in Sydney NSW 1858. Attending the wedding as witnesses were a John Shanahan and Catherine Ryan. We believe she was likely to be a free immigrant not a convict.

We have not been able to identify which Margaret Ryan our Margaret Ryan is from the number that came to NSW. All we know is that she came from Tipperary. Her parents were Jeremiah Ryan and Johanna Shanahan, again fairly common names at the time. We have found no records from Irish sites.

Margaret was illiterate. She married James Collins in 1858 in Sydney NSW. At the time of James Collins's death in 1895 they had 10 surviving children. My great grandfather was the third eldest John Collins.

  • Hi Annette

Thank you for your query. Firstly when you say that you have had no success with records in Ireland, where have you searched? include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Have you checked the immigration records in Australia? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

As there are no civil register records before 1864 and no census before 1901 the next place i would advise you to search is land valuation. You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/

These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable

Here are some other website that you may not have searched that may aid you further:

Annette I hope that this information is of some help to you. Focus on trying to find the place name of your family in Tipperary for the moment and you will be on the right track.

  • Anne,

I am looking for SHANAHAN family in Co Tipperary and in Co Limerick and Waterford as well.

I keep a huge database of SHANAHAN info that I've come across in my research and took a look to see if I could find any marriages between a Johanna SHANAHAN and a Jeremiah RYAN, but came up completely empty.

Could you give me a little more info on your Margaret Ryan (approximate birth date etc?)  Also as to those 10 kids James Collins and Margaret Ryan had...any of the female children named after Margaret's mother (variations of Johanna for instance Hanna, Honoria, etc? )  Armed w/ a little more info I might be able to find something.

    Thanks!

  • We have now located records for Jeremiah Ryan and Johanna Shanahan from Ireland. They were also known as Darby and Judy/Judith Shanahan. There are some records from Upper Church.

Its taken years of looking at records but we recently had a break through with Margaret Ryan and her sister Catherine Ryan. They came to Australia in 1855 on the Rajasthan with their Uncle John Shanahan. He had a sister in NSW, Margaret Kearney. Margaret Shanahan had married Daniel Kearney in Ireland before emigrating to NSW in 1841. Both Jerry and Judy are deceased on Margaret and Catherine's immigration in 1855. John Shanahan parents were Edmund and Catherine Shanahan. All were coming from Upper Church in Tipperary.

Catherine Ryan marries twice as she is widowed once. Both marriage records in NSW mention Jeremiah Ryan and one mentions. Johanna Shanahan.

There are few Kearney's (Carney) or Shanahan's in NSW in the 1840s -1850s which makes them easy to identify. We thought Catherine was Margaret's sister but were unable to prove this for such a long time. We were all certain John Shanahan had to be related. Margaret Kearney and John Shanahan are Johanna Ryan's siblings. Its taken a long time to get enough connecting records to find the links.
