  • Hi Dolores

What would be the difference between Abington of Tipperary and Abington of Limerick. How far apart are they? Do they share the same border?

    Thanks

  • yes, they were the same civic parish in the 1800's  - most of it in Co. Tipperary and a small part in Co. Limerick. See here for a detailed description: http://www.from-ireland.net/lewis-topographical-dictionary-article/Abington/Tipperary.

The modern day Abington is in the parish of Murroe, County Limerick on the Tipperary border - I suggest you post your message there as there is a good local group who might be able to help you.

  • I am trying to find information on my great grandfather James Ryan.  He was born about 1835-1845.  He emgrated to the US during our Civil War and was conscripted into the Union Army.  After the war he returned to Ireland to find a bride according to the family legend.  He married Mary Ryan about 1867-1870.  They had three children, Margaret born about 1870, Daniel born about 1874, and John (my grandfather) born 1884.  All three children emigrated to the US in the 1900-1906 time frame.  John Ryan married Hanora (Nora) Berkery of Ballyvorheen, Murroe, Co Limerick in 1914 in New York City.  John Ryan died 1940 and Nora died 1976.  I have a great deal of information about my grandmother but very little about my grandfather who died before I was born.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also would like to know the orign of the Ryan sept nickname "The Yank".  Does this have anything to do with my greatgrandfather.
