I'm searching for my husband's family from Tipperary.

I'm not sure of the exact spelling of the surname as it's been suggested that when Patrick originally came from Ireland to Australia his surname was Brian as on the land title for the first piece of land he purchased to farm has the name Brian on it. We're not sure if this was a mistake made by the titles office or was his surname.

Patrick O'Brien/O'Brian/Brian b. 1815 approx ,in Tipperary married to Mary Hickey  approx. his son Patrick b. 18 June 1862 married Anne Donovan b. 1836.

I have the marriage certificate for Patrick and Anne as they were married in Australia but it appears that neither of them could write as both their signatures are marked as a cross. Patrick's death certificate states that he was born in Tipperary but no parish is mentioned.

He arrived in Australia in 1858 on the ship Planter aged 21.

We know he had a brother who emigrated to the U.S as we have a letter from the brother's daughter.

We have no other information on the families origins however.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Lesley,

Go onto the irishfamilyhistoryfoundation.  It's free to join and peruse.  You only have to pay to actually view a record.

YOu can cross reference many records to ensure you're opening the one that might be yours.  It's not expensive.

I typed in Patrick o  Brien b 1837 and got hundreds of hits.  These are the church parish registers. Most counties are online.  I then narrowed it down to Co. Tipperary and got fewer hits.  Tipperary is diveded into two so there are two genealogy centres. Just click on the map.  No hits for south Tipp but I got a few Patrick o vriens in North Tipp.

I then imput mothers name as Hickey and came up with just one Patrick O Brien.  At this stage you need to pay to view about €6 or so.   I scrolled down ;through all the roman catholic parishes in north tipp and found this Patrick o Brien in Youghlarra.

This sounds like it could be your ancestor.   You will need to open this record and read every detail.  If you think this is you ancestor, then at least you have a parish.  Go through the marriages for the previous 10-15 years and see if you can find patrick snr and Mary Hickey.  ONce you have a thread to pull, hopefully it will unravel back to their births.

When inputting names , just put in the bare amount of info and gradually refine your search.  If you put it all in you'll get nowhere.  Also bear in mind that all these registers were in Latin and some of them damaged etc (I know because I've seen some) so keep an open mind on first names.  Mary could be Maria or Marion etc.

Hope this was of some help to you,

    Kind regards,
