Hello,

I am looking for Hassett and Hawley ancestors from, I believe, Toomevara, Tipperary. Edward Hassett was born around 1800 and married Catherine or Kate Hawley /Hawly. This is the information on son John's [b 1828 Toomevara d 1878 - Victoria, Australia] marriage and death certificates. John was sentenced to transportation to Australia. I can't find any birth records for him.

There is a record for a Thomas Hassett, son of Edward and Kate. There are apparently other siblings [thanks to their descendants providing info] but no official documentation or paper trail is found.

John married Mary Drew here in Australia - her certificates say she was born in Tipperary [no other information] and her father is supposed to be Patrick Drew of Patrickswell - I don't think that's in Tipperary?? He married Mary Moroney of Tipperary so perhaps that was the move there.

This is our brick wall so I really hope that there is a snippet of Hassett info out there somewhere.

Cheers,

Mary

  • thanks so much for your replies.

I will go looking in Limerick for Patrickswell.

And Michael looks promising as a brother for John. I did find Thomas in 1834, so Michael in 1832 makes sense. Although on John's convict papers it says his offence 'was the same as Michael Hassett, my cousin'. His convict paper says Father is Edward, mother is Catherine, brothers William, Michael, Patrick, Edward. Sisters Biddy, Ellen, Mary. So yes, Michael is back in as brother :-)

    Where is John's paper trail???

I found a James Hassett died in 1890 that I think is Edward's brother so John's uncle.

Thanks again - very much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Mary
