Hi I have a family story that i cannot find any proof of.

Firstly Catherine Ryan (Raymond) married William Kennedy (b abt 1850) who died young in 1881 from complications after a fractured skull, following him being attacked (mistaken identity apparently) and struck by a stone whilst returning from Drumbane Market in his donkey and cart.

His death certificate carries the Tipp Coroner's signature and a comment re the complication but no mention of why the coroner was involved.   However I can find no evidence in newspapers, coroners reports or anything else to corroborate the attack. Does anyone know of this story or where there may be comment on it.

Catherine Kennedy (Ryan) above then remarried Martin Gleeson and they lived in Shanballyduff.

William Kennedy and Catherine Ryan (Raymond) had a daughter Margaret Kennedy who married Martin Gleeson's brother John and they lived in Pennefatherswood or Lower Wood,Drombane right next to Shanballyduff.

I would love to contact someone who knows these families to share information.

  • Sorry I missed saying that William Kennedy and Catherine Ryan (Raymond) were living in Shanballyduff at the time of the attack.

  • Hi Christina,

Coroners reports are available up to 1876 online not beyond and I am not sure where to find anymore - will have to try "The Source" at Thurles next time I am in Ireland.

I have found nothing in newspaper searches.  Got all the census data and traced all my relatives back to those dates but they tell the story and no-one has the paper evidence to support it or knows where it maybe. I am waiting on an American relative but not sure if she has it.

The coroner definately got involved to make a statement on the death certificate (complications from fractured skull - 6 weeks) But honestly I cannot find out anything else other than people tell me the story. A mystery?

  • Hi Gerry, The Source in Thurles would have newspaper reports of Coronors reports.  There were about six newspapers in Co Tipperary, plus The Freemans Journal. Which you may have to go to the Nationa Library to read.

Also if you go to the National Archives, they have Outrage reports, you may get it there.

Best of luck, get back to me if you have any questions.

    Christina.

  • Hey Gerry. I think I am also decended from this family. My great grandparents were Daniel Lee and Catherine Kennedy. Catherine was the daughter of Edmond Kennedy and Catherine Gleeson. I'm currently awaiting certificates so I should know more soon.

  • Hi Clare.   Marvelous if it proves true.   I am not aware of a Daniel Lee and cannot easily find marriages between Edmond and Catherine but I am hopeful and waiting for your find.
