My great grand parents, Henry Ryan (b:1815) and Catherine Ryan (nee Ryan b:1821) emigrated to South Australia, via Plymouth, on the SS Rodney in 1855 with their children, Patrick, Ann, Edmond, Michael and Julia. They came from the Kilcommon and Upperchurch area and, from the church records, I think Henry's parents were Patrick Ryan and Ann Carew also from Kilcommon and Upperchurch.

I've now hit the proverbial "brick wall" although in Tipperary, with all those Ryans, It feels more like a bouncy-castle.

I wonder if there are records of emigrants leaving Ireland ... there's plenty of records of them arriving in Adelaide but they don't give any background information.

Kind regards,

Trev Ryan.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Generally, there are no records of people living Ireland in the 19th century unless they were part of an organized scheme like the Peter Robinson project.

As you indicated, trying to research Ryans in Tipperary is a very difficult proposition.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing? Possibly you will match someone who has a lot more info on your Ryans and/or Carews.

Hi Christina and Roger. Thanks for your replies.

Roger, I have gone down thw DNA path via Ancestry.com and have had contact with distant cousins but all in South Australia.

Christina, I'll attach copies of the Kilcommon and Upperchurch church records that I have found. There's the birth and marriage for my great grandfather Henry and birth records for four of their children, Ann, Patrick, Edmund and Mary. I think Mary may not have survived as she wasn't on the passenger list when they arrived in Adelaide.

    Regards,   Trev.

  • Hi Trev.

I have been trying to do some research on your Ryan's.

The address Finnaha given in the baptism of last child,  I would have heard of and know people there. I will try and do more on this for you.

There is a Book after been written by Australian historian Brian Kennedy on the Ryan's in Tipperary.

He says they originated in the parishes you mention, I am Getting copy of the book as I have lots of Ryan ancestors, in this area as well.

Don't give up on the DNA,  I had mine done and found it amazing.

    Christina.

  • Thanks Christina. My other great grand parents were Griffins and came from the Castleisland area in Kerry where there seems to be plenty of Griffins but not quite as confusing as all the Ryans in Tipperary!

  • Hi Trev,  I will let you know if I find anything on your Ryan's,

I am researching townland in Kilcommon 1815 for first baptism, A lot of the names of townlands in that parish changed the spelling slightly,  Will let you know what I find..

  • Trev,

Hello. The surname Carew is interchangeable with Carey - my maiden name.

My 3rd great grandparents Thomas Carew and Winifred Ryan were married 13 Feb 1825 in Kilcommon. At this time I do not know who Thomas' parents or siblings were. Winifred was born 7 Mar 1803 in Newport, the daughter of Patrick Ryan and Marion Halloran. I have found one sister for her - Anna born 4 Apr 1804 in Newport.

My 2nd great grandfather, Thomas and Winifred's son, James C. Carey was born 17 May 1838 address Banquet Hill, Kilcommon. The family emigrated to America about 1842, settled in Clinton County New York. I do not know the fate of Thomas, but James later went to Michigan and settled in Pocahontas County, Iowa.

So Thomas Carew is my brickwall. He may have had siblings that left for Austrilia as opposed to the US. I have also Ancestry DNA tested and have had my father tested through FamilyTreeDNA, both autosomal and Y67.

Have you uploaded your results to GEDmatch? It's a free 3rd party tool to compare test across the various companies.

My Ancestry tree is Carey Moline Family Tree - I do keep it private but always share with my ancestors!

    Hoping to make a connection!

  • Hi Dawn

I have followed this thread with interest as I have also drawn a blank with the Careys.

My husband's Great Grandmother was Mary Toohey. Her maiden name was Mary Carey and was she was born in 1803 in Shanbally Enon, Kilcommon, Tipperary Ireland. Her fathers name was James Carey and her mother was Mary Davitt. Mary Carey married Thomas Toohey in Shanbally Enon in 1826 and the sponsors were Michael Carey and Daniel Ryan.

Mary later emigrated to Australia (without Thomas) but with 3 of her children, in 1858, to join her daughter Johanna who had emigrted to Australia previously with her husband Daniel Murphy of Banquet Hill.

I don't know if there was any connection between the Carey's I am researching or if it is coincidental that they were from the same area.

    Regards

    Leanne

  • Leanne,

It is very likely that we are connected. I could not locate Shanbally Enon in Google maps or Geohive. It might be easier to email directly to see if we can piece this together. My email is dawnhenry9@gmail.com
