Hello,

My GGgrandfather Miles (Myles) McCarron and wife Catherine Bridget Hackett came to Canada with son John (born 1843) in 1843/1844. His death record indicates he is from County Tyrone. I recently found the following index record on Ancestry from the "Selection of Catholic Parish Marriage & Banns 1742-1884" file.

Name: Miletius McCarron

Date: 7 Feb 1842

Event: Bann

Spouse: Catharina Macket

Parish: Clogher    County: Tyrone

Witnesses: Jacobo McKenna and Sara Reigan

Would any additional information be available on the original record and if it is available? The names appear to be Latin and given handwriting - Macket could be Hacket.

Miles' parents are Francis McCarron and Alice McCarthy.

Thanks, Maureen

  • Maureen,

There wouldn?t be any more information on the actual entry in the parish register. RC marriage records from that era generally contain just the couples names and their 2 witnesses. No addresses, parents names etc.

It was likewise common for them to be recorded in Latin. Jacobo (normally Jacobus) is James.

Macket is not really an Irish name. (There?s none in the 1901 census) and I?d say there?s a strong chance of it being Hackett. Obviously that is something you might clear up if you saw the original. There?s a copy in PRONI in Belfast and also in the National Library in Dublin.
