I am searching for information on the mccaffrey and McElroy families of shanco in clogher.

pat mccaffrey married maryann mcelroy in 1865. They had 8 I think children of whom Bridget born 1878 is my great granny. On their marriage cert both are listed as living in shanco.

patricks father is down as Bryan. He appears in the 1860 Griffiths valuation for ballywholan. Patrick was born around 1839 so Bryan must have been born around 1805 possibly.

mary Ann's father is John McElroy also shanco. Owen McElroy from memory is in Griffiths for shanco. He could be johns father or elder brother.

without the tithes I won't be able to trace much further back.

The Co. Tyrone web site contains Tithe information but at the present time only a few of the townlands in Clogher parish have been transcribed. I would periodically look for updates. See link.

I note that you live in Ireland and I assume you know that PRONI in Belfast has the tithe data.

  • A common misunderstanding is not all are listed in the Tithe's. Only the ones with enough land to produce taxable agriculture. So if your people do not fall under those guidelines, then you may not have much luck with the Tithe's.

    Something to keep in mind.

Have you any idea what church they attended?
