Does anyone have tips for finding data from 1700's? My 3rd great-grandfather (William Glover) was born in 1792 in Desertcrete near Stewartstown, CountyTyrone. This is according to military records I found (71st Foot). My problem is I can't find anything earlier than this on main genealogy sites. His first born son was name Hugh and first born daughter was named Mary which I believe typically indicates his parents names? He came to Canada in 1831 to receive soldiers land grant near Toronto. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  His second born daughters name was Elizabeth; someone told me that 1st born daughter is usually name after mothers mother so I thought it was best to include that as well.

  • You don’t say what denomination William was but it may not matter since no denomination has any church records for the 1700s for Desertcreat. The earliest are the Church of Ireland which start in 1812. No Glovers in Desercreat in Griffiths Valuation of 1860. No Glovers in the tithes for the parish in 1825.

Not a very common name in the county. In the 1901 census there were just 10, and only 6 of those were actually born in Tyrone. 7 Church of Ireland and 3 Presbyterian.

The general absence of records in Ireland in the 1700s makes research notoriously difficult. No easy solution I am afraid.

  • Thanks Elwyn.  According to all documents that I could find he was Presbyterian so I'm guessing they came over from Scotland. I think I may have just hit the proverbial wall.  Thanks again!
