John Joseph Campbell was born in Armagh on 15th April 1902 to parents John Campbell and Alice Mallon. I believe he had 2 sisters - Margaret Campbell (b1904) and Dympna Josephine Campbell (b 29th May 1907 Edward St, Armagh and died 8th June 1926, Banbridge, co Down).
The family were registered as living at Main St, Strabane, Tyrone on the 1911 Census.
On 17th May 1932 John Joseph Campbell married Mary Teresa (May) Murtagh at St Patrick's Catholic church, Derrymacash, Lurgan, Armagh.

I believe John Joseph and Mary Teresa had 4 children but I am unable to source confirmation of all the dates of birth. I think that they had a son, Michael Laurence Campbell who was born 11th June 1939 at Dungannon Parish, Tyrone. I think they also had a son, John Joseph (Sean) Campbell (birth date unknown), and two daughters - Dympna Campbell and Margaret Campbell (married name Grimley) who died in Moy, Dungannon, 11th Jan 2021.

I am looking for any help on filling in the missing gaps. I understand that privacy laws means I can't access many records after 1922 but if I could find any relatives of John Joseph Campbell including any brothers or sisters, I would be very happy and most grateful.

  • There are several people on Ancestry researching this family. Perhaps they might help. Go to:

If you don't have an Ancestry subscription, you can probably access Ancestry for free at your library.

  • Fran,

Regarding privacy post 1922, two points:

IRO policy is not to give out information on anyone who might still be alive. That said, post 1922 records are not closed, but there are restrictions on how you can access them.  GRONI is the only repository for birth, death and marriage records in what is now Northern Ireland, from 1.1.1922 onwards. (Ancestry and other websites don’t have them).

Births in Northern Ireland within the past 100 years, marriages within the past 75 and deaths within the past 50 aren’t searchable on-line. They are open to the public, just not on-line. If you know all the key details eg exact date and place of birth, parents names etc, you can order a copy of a certificate from GRONI for £15 (sterling). https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

But if you don’t have all the information, you need to get in touch with them to get a search done.  They will do a 5 year search for £7 and if they find a matching certificate you can purchase it for £8, coming to a total of £15. It will be posted to you a few days later. You pay over the phone using a credit card. You type your number in on the phone keypad. They don’t know what it is.  They won’t deal with these searches and orders by e-mail or post because they need you to type the credit card number in yourself.

    Phone: 0300 200 7890 (+44 300 200 7890 from outside the UK)

Alternatively if you live near Belfast, you can go in person GRONI in Belfast where you can search recent records, right up to those registered yesterday. You can view each cert there for £2.50, and if you want a certified copy it’s an extra £8. (Posted out in 2 to 3 weeks time).

If you are unable to go yourself, you could employ a researcher. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net
