My ancestors were TERENCE MULGREW and ISABELLA DONAGHY.  Children were at least 13 in number. At least two, James and Bernard, stayed in Shantavny. Most others immigrated - Francis and Sarah to Victoria, Australia; Patrick to Cumberland, England; Catherine, Peter, Terence, Margaret to Rhode Island, United States. Possibly three others who came to Rhode Island were Ann, Mary and Ellen - who may have been children of Terence and a first wife. Looking for any further information or connections.

  • Hi there,

Could you please enter the period of time you are interested in. This will help both me and the local communities to help you further.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • To expand some on my initial message, I believe TERENCE MULGREW to be the person granted a land-lease in 1818 from Sir Willliam Verner in Shantavny Irish townland. He was still listed there, although with less land, in Tithes survey in 1834.

A son James was born in 1827, and the last child, Margaret in 1839. There are some confusing issues which may indicate Terence had a first marriage with 3 children born, 1813--1821.

Terence was perhaps born ca 1785-1795.  Most of the children who emigrated left between late 1830s and late 1850s.

  • From my limited research my Great, Great Grandmother was Rose Mulgrew, not sure who her husband was.

Rose is listed as being 80 years old in 1901.

  • I live in California. We have been to Ballygawley, and one day drove up into the hills of Shantavny. I should have knocked on a  door or two. But, alas, did not. Maybe we would have met 12 years ago!

We did not walk the cemetery next to the church. I have a photo of Isabella's gravestone.

Isabella was the niece I believe of my gr gr grandmother, Margaret Mulgrew (1839-1924.)

  • Hi Sinead, not sure how to link in however I am interested as Loree in the Mulgrew origins.  I am decended also from Terence Mulgrew, his son Francis (born August 1836 Shantavny Irish) moved to Australia as a 19 year old in 1855. He died in 1891.   I have little info on Terence (actually Loree has helped a great deal in this area!). It would be great to find out more.

Really just wanting to touch base and let you know that there are quite a few Mulgrews in Australia from the 3 that came across.

    Regards

  • Hi Gayle,

Thanks for joining the group!  Maybe we'll get somewhere with this family!  I've been working with another researcher with a different Mulgrew family.... but who knows, related somehow. It's the Blackstone, Massachusetts group.... and they from Ballygawley too.  Just don't know what townland.  Yet. (ever the optimist!)  Anyway, back to our family soon!

  • There is a City of Providence, Rhode Island, USA, "Return of Death" certificate for Annie Mulgrew Farrell dated 1883-age 69 at 28 Howard Street (though most of the census activity around this family lists North Providence, Pawtucket, and MA. North Providence and Pawtucket can be the same area prior to late 1870s).

Parents named for Annie are "Terrence and Isobella" (using the alternate spellings) Mulgrew, rather than the possible first wife Ann as listed above. Though the timing woud be right for a first wife as mother?  Perhaps Loree has already shared this document.

Ann Mulgrew Farrell is my great-great grandmother on my maternal grandfather's line. Ann Farrel's daughter Mary Ann Farrell, my great grandmother, married William Henry Whitehead the born-in-RI son of an immigrant to Rhode Island from Yorkshire, James Whitehead. Both Ann, Edward, and daughter Mary Ann are listed as buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI.

I have not found a grave/stone for Edward and Ann, yet. But a lovely stone is set for Mary Ann (Farrell) Whitehead with her family. The stone may have been provided by Mary Elizabeth Whitehead Lister known to us as "Dolly" Lister. The Listers were a woolen mill-owning family in RI.

My mother's family kept good track of these folks across generations, so I am lucky to understand who is related to whom and how. But it is a joy to be able to connect the immigrant generation to their home region in Tyrone.

I am also looking to trace Barlow origins in Tyrone. Patrick Barlow (son of John and Mary) arrived in NY in May of 1846 on the Ship Elizabeth. He listed Tyrone as his last place of residence. He made his way to Providence and eventually married Bridget Kelley (or Reilly).  Thanks!  -MLP
