According to records I have, my Great Great Great Grandfather, Bernard Owens, was born in Fivemiletown, Tyrone (circa 1832).  His father was William Owens (died in Fivemiletown circa 1840s) and mother is unknown to me.

Bernard married Mary Ann McDermot (born circa 1852).  I have no record of her birthplace nor her parents (other than being Irish).

Any information further to the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Matt

  • Betty,

Just a minor comment on your e-mail in which you said that Catholics couldn’t own land in Ireland around 1850. That’s not correct. They could own land (most of the penal laws had been repealed by the late 1700s). There were Catholic landowners in the country at that time (and indeed interestingly there were some all through the penal law period too). However most landowners were reluctant to sell and so it was difficult to buy land. But not illegal.

  •   Hi to the Owens family investigators.   Am posting this cause my ancestor,  John McGuire, came from close to Fivemiletown to migrate with his wife Sarah to Sth Australia in 1855, and from what I read your dates are close to mine and I'm wondering if any of you have contact with a current day Fivemiletowner who is knowledgeable on local area ancestry stuff.?

Thanks and all the best.  Cheers   Paddy
