I am searching for information on brothers Hugh, James and Felix McCullough from County Tyrone. Grandfather is Hugh McCullough who immigrated to the United States with brother James in 1869. Hugh married Margaret Murphy in Grayson County, Texas, and died there in 1910. His death certificate says Hugh was born about 1841 in County Tyrone and lists his parents as John McCullough and Catherine Dugan.

Hugh's brother, Felix, stayed in County Tyrone and lived in Mullaghwotragh, which appears to be in the parish of either Arboe or Tamlaght. Felix married Catherine Conway in 1885 and they had two daughters, Mary Ann and Catherine, one son, John, and possibly another daughter, Bridget, who died young. Baptismal records have been found on the RootsIreland website for these children and also a church marriage record for Felix and Catherine, all in Mullaghwotragh. I have the civil registration of their marriage, too. Felix's family is also on the 1901 and 1911 Irish Censuses in Mullaghwotragh, Civil Parish of Arboe, PLU of Cookstown. Family letters indicate that these McCullough's were related to other McCullagh's living in Plumridge.

This family was Catholic and church parish registers don't go back past 1865 for the Coagh RC parish. Church of Ireland parish records were checked for Tamlaght parish, but none of these McCullough's were listed.

I have also checked Griffith's Valuation and have found some John McCullough/McCullagh's, but there are several who could be a possible father of Hugh.

I am trying to find out when and where Hugh McCullough was born and where his parents, John and Catherine lived. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mullaghwotragh townland is in Arboe civil parish.

I looked at the 1859 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and as you mentioned there are a couple John McCullaghs in the parish but not in Mullaghwotragh.

You mentioned that you have the civil marriage record for Felix and Catherine in 1885. What townland was Felix living in when married?

You may want to look at the Griffiths Revision books for Arboe parish which are on the PRONI site. These books show how  property was transferred in the years after 1859. I would look at Mullaghwotragh and work backwards but also start with the two John McCullaghs in Annaghmore and Sessiagh townlands and see who took over their holdings. You might get a clue on whether either of the two Johns was the father of Hugh and Felix.

I looked at the civil death index records and there is a John McCullough who died in 1892 and according to the informant was born 1811. The name is common in the area so it very well could be another John.

Let me know if you have questions.
