Hi

my great grandmothers name was Teresa Mary Kennedy. She was baptised in England (newcastle upon Tyne). Unsure if she was born in England or Ireland. Teresa married an australian born man - William Horace Roberts - on the 12 May (unsure of year). They met in WW1. After marriage moved to Australia.Teresa Mary Kennedy's mother - Teresa Devlin - lived in Ireland - evidence we have suggests it could have been Dungannon - Teresa Devlin married a Kennedy, unsure of his name but he was from Ireland also.any records of Teresa Devlin/Kennedy ?

  • Sarah,

I am struggling a bit to help you without a little more information. When was Teresa born/baptised? When did she and William Horace Roberts leave England? Did they meet and marry in the Newcastle area, or was it somewhere else? Do you have William?s parents names, eg from his death cert? (I have looked for him in the 1911 census but there?s a surprising number of people with that name).

If the family were RC and you know that Teresa was baptised in Newcastle, then she?s likely born there. RC practice is to baptise within a day or so after birth (to avoid limbo). I can search for her birth but I need a date and exact location for the baptism. (That will then give me her father?s name).

  • Hi

I have since found out she was baptised Mary Theresa Kennedy. Born on the 3 march 1896. Baptised in Newcastle upon Tyne. Birthplace 24 Brougham place Newcastle upon Tyne.

Her mother was Teresa Devlin & Father was John Kennedy & his Mothers name was Mary Ann O'Hara.

mary Theresa & William met during the war when William was injured. I know that they married In Newcastle upon Tyne also on the 12 May - unsure of year.

william was born in Australia. I guess that's why they moved out here after they married.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks, Sarah.

  • Sarah,

I am afraid I can?t find much out about this lady.

Firstly, the only birth of a Mary Theresa Kennedy in Newcastle in 1896 appears to be in April ? Jun (Newcastle 1896 Volume 10b page 13).  The name, location and year agree with your information but clearly the date of birth wasn?t 3rd March unless the birth was registered late.  You might want to order that birth certificate to see if it?s the right girl, and to confirm her parents names.

I looked for her in the 1901 & 1911 censuses for England & Ireland but cannot find her.

I looked for her marriage to Wm Horace Roberts. They married Apr ? Jun 1919, Newcastle Vol 10b, page 301. He is listed as William R H Roberts.

I can?t find any record of a Kennedy/Devlin marriage, in Dungannon or anywhere else in Ireland that fits the information you have given.

If you need guidance on how to order English birth & marriage certs, let me know.

  • Hi Sarah

I think you may need to review your information.

William R H ROBERTS married Mary T KENNEDY in the quarter ending June 1919 at Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland Volume 10b Page 301.

William’s full name was William Ronald Herbert (not Horace) ROBERTS.

I have found a birth for William R H ROBERTS in New South Wales, Australia.

The year 1892, Registration No 27169.  His father is shown as Robert H (Herbert) and mother as Elizabeth A.  The Registration district is given as NYNGAN.

There is a marriage record for Robert H ROBERTS to Elizabeth A BIGGS in 1891, Registration No 6218 at NYNGAN.

    Their children were:

    William R H

Olive A, registered at Braidwood, 1895/20966

Horace V, registered at Goulburn, 1897/3328

Frederick C, registered at Goulburn, 1901/22256

Bessie A, registered at Goulburn, 1904/12305

Ronald E, registered at Goulburn, 1907/3423

William Ronald Herbert ROBERTS signed up to the Australian Imperial Forces on 24/3/1916 at Goulburn.  His father’s address as next of kin was given as Windellama, N S Wales.

If I’ve done it right this link should take you to his enlistment and service papers. (19 pages)

If it doesn’t come through, let me know and I’ll download the documents.

A John KENNEDY married Mary Ann O’HARRA in quarter ending Mar 1894 at Newcastle T - Vol 10 Page 136.

The 1901 English Census has a John Kennedy born Newcastle upon Tyne, Mary Kennedy (O’Harra) born Ireland, each 32 years, Francis J Kennedy 6 years, Maris T  Kennedy (I think Marie or Maria) age 5, John aged 4, Nora aged 3, and John’s mother-in-law Mary O Hora, aged 60 born in Ireland.

The 1911 English Census John Kennedy, Mary Ann Kennedy, Francis Joseph, Marie Teresa, John, Nora, Mary Jane & James Alfonsus.  There was no mother in law.

I suspect the Devlin’s come into the picture further back.

As I don’t know much of your history, please check the details carefully.

If I can be of any help from this side of the world, please contact me. Kathy

  • Hi Elwyn

Interesting.  Perhaps I should see if I can  order a birth certificate.

Would you be able to guide me please?

  • Sarah,

You can order a copy of the certificate from GRO, Southport. It should cost ?9.25.

    Go to:  https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Just enter the information you have. You?ll see that there?s an option for putting the Volume and page number. Alternatively you can just put the year and Newcastle and leave it to GRO to do the searching. Up to you.

Last time I ordered one it took about 3 weeks to come (to a UK address).

  • Hi Kathy

ive reviewed my information and Williams side checks out. It was Herbert not Horace.

As for the Kennedy's I think I was given incorrect information and yes Mary Anne  O'hara was Mary Theresa's mum.

What I'd like to know is where abouts in Ireland was Mary Anne  O'hara from? Or born?

    Thanks
