I'm trying to find out any information that I can about my Great Grandfather, Francis Brannigan.

He was born in County Tyrone c.1820

He married his wife named Susan born c.1825 (don't know her maiden name) in County Tyrone.

The had 4 Children in County Tyrone:

Elizabeth c.1839
Jno (John) c.1841
Jas (James) c.1842
Bridget c.1846

Then they moved to County Durham, England (somewhere between 1846 and 1849) to work as a Coal Miner. In the 1851 English Census, both Francis and Susan stated they were born in County Tyrone.  They had 5 more children in County Durham, England.

Felix c.1849
Francis c.1851
Sarah c.1854
Michael c.1856
Owen 1860 (Owen is my Grandfather)

They immigrated to the United States arriving on 29 Jul 1869 and settled in Plains, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Here he continued to be a Coal Miner and died 12 Aug 1898.

  • Rootsireland (subscription site) has a marriage for a Francis Branagen in Co Tyrone in 1839. I don?t know who the bride was. (Susan doesn?t fit). You may want to pay to look that marriage up anyway in case it?s a variant of Susan.

I also found a match for John & James born c 1841 in Co Tyrone to parents Francis & Susan. (But I didn't find Bridget and Elizabeth). But that looks a bit like your family though.

  • Thank you.  I went to rootsireland and tried those 2 searches you mentioned and I get 0 responses.

Is there a trick to the search that I'm not getting?
